Starling Marte Injury Update

Published:

Starling Marte was removed from this afternoon’s game in the bottom of the fourth inning during an at bat. After swinging at the first two pithes of the at bat, Marte reached for his left side in obvious discomfort. He was tended to on the field by the team trainer and Manager Clint Hurdle. He then continued his at bat, only to be pulled after hitting a weak grounder foul and taking a ball. He was replaced by Gregory Polanco, who eventually grounded out.

The Pirates announced that Marte left the game with discomfort in his left side. His status will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Clint Hurdle talked about Marte’s injury after the game.

“I don’t know if it was the exact swing in that at bat,” Hurdle said. “There have been some situations where it pops up then goes away, and it didn’t look like it was going away. I made a call and took him out. He wanted to stay in, but it didn’t feel right to me in my gut. The risk would have been greater than the reward.”

Marte mentioned that this wasn’t the first time that an injury like this has occurred to him, saying that he had something similar happen two years ago. He was not immediately sure of his availability tomorrow.
