Injury Update: John Holdzkom Tosses First Bullpen Session

Published:

INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time since his most recent trip to the disabled list, John Holdzkom is throwing off the mound. Holdzkom tossed a side bullpen session this afternoon before the Indianapolis Indians game at Victory Field.

The 2015 season has been pretty much a loss for Holdzkom after a great deal of excitement following a strong showing at the end of 2014. He has been dealing with shoulder injuries all season, earning numerous DL stints.

“[The session] felt ok,” Holdzkom said. “Hopefully it feels as good tomorrow.”

Before his first trip to the DL, Holdzkom struggled immensely to throw strikes and did not get the same movement on his pitches as he saw in 2014. After returning, the control and movement were better, but the velocity was down significantly.

When asked about a time-table for a return this season, Holdzkom did not sound confident, saying they were “going day-to-day.”

**The Pirates made a few minor moves this afternoon. They activated Kelson Brown off the Indianapolis DL. Corey Hart’s rehab assignment was completed with Indianapolis. No corresponding move has been announced yet, so his status is in limbo for now. Montana DuRapau was officially added to the Altoona roster, which we reported on yesterday. Hunter Morris was also added to the Altoona roster.

He began writing for Pirates Prospects in 2013, in a stint that ran through 2016 (with no service time manipulation played in). Ryan rejoined the team in 2022, covering Indianapolis once again. He has covered the Pirates in four different big league stadiums. Ryan was also fortunate enough to cover the 2015 Futures Game in Cincinnati.
