Deolis Guerra Elects Free Agency

Published:

Right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra has declared free agency after being outrighted off the Pirates’ 40-man roster last week. He was assigned to Indianapolis, but has decided to go the free agent route instead.

Guerra had a 6.48 ERA in ten appearances with the Pirates this season, striking out 17 batters in 16.2 innings, though that came with a .371 BAA. He had a 1.23 ERA in 25 relief appearances for Indianapolis this season. The Pirates actually lost Guerra on waivers to the Indians during the season, only to get him right back after it was found out that he had a knee injury. After going on the disabled list on August 7th, he didn’t pitch again the rest of the season.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
