Four Pirates Among the Top Prospects at Their Position

Published:

Baseball America continued their season of ranking the best prospects at each position, covering first base, second base and shortstop over the last three days. A little more than a week ago, they listed the top right-handed pitchers and top catchers, ranking Reese McGuire seventh and Elias Diaz ninth, while Tyler Glasnow was third and Jameson Taillon ranked 30th.

On their lists posted this week, Josh Bell ranked second for first basemen. Keith Law had Bell ranked third overall, while he has been ranked both first and second on other lists. You can see Law’s list for each position here.

Alen Hanson ranked fifth for second basemen. He was fourth for Keith Law.

For shortstops, they have Cole Tucker ranked 21st and Kevin Newman ranked 22nd. Those numbers might sound low, but it’s a very deep position for prospects right now, with 17 shortstops making BA’s top 100 list. Keith Law only went 15 spots in his shortstop rankings. He had Newman tenth and Tucker didn’t make the list.

You can see Baseball America’s top 100 here. Glasnow, Bell, Austin Meadows and Harold Ramirez made their list. We will post the BA third base and outfield rankings later in the week(assuming they are posted this week).

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
