Morning Report: Updated Leaders Around the Farm System

Published:

At the end of April, I did the team leaders throughout the system. I’m going to update that list, but for comparison sake, I’ve copied the list from last month. The first total is from the original list, while the second total after the “…..” is for the current leaders. I used a minimum of 30 plate appearances and 15 innings pitched last time, so I just doubled those numbers for the current leaders.

Average (minimum 30…60 plate appearances)

Indianapolis: Jason Rogers .366 …. Josh Bell .308

Altoona: Erich Weiss .294 …. Jonathan Schwind .316

Bradenton: Kevin Newman .360 ….. Newman .346

West Virginia: Ke’Bryan Hayes .343 ….Tito Polo .298

OPS (minimum 30…60 plate appearances)

Indianapolis: Jason Rogers 1.118 …. Josh Bell .880

Altoona: Erich Weiss .878 …. Jonathan Schwind .909

Bradenton: Kevin Newman .870 …. Newman .858

West Virginia: Ke’Bryan Hayes .826 ….. Daniel Arribas .879

HOME RUNS

Indianapolis: Jason Rogers/Josh Bell/Max Moroff 3 ….. Danny Ortiz 6

Altoona: Jose Osuna 4 …. Stetson Allie/Osuna 5

Bradenton: Taylor Gushue/Pablo Reyes 2 …. Jordan Luplow/Gushue 4

West Virginia: Daniel Arribas 3 …. Arribas/Polo 6

STOLEN BASES

Indianapolis: Adam Frazier 9 …. Frazier 13

Altoona: Barrett Barnes 2 …. Austin Meadows 8

Bradenton: six players with 2 …. Jeff Roy 6

West Virginia: Tito Polo 8 …. Polo 16

ERA (minimum 15…30 innings pitched)

Indianapolis: Chad Kuhl 1.31 …. Kuhl 1.03

Altoona: Tyler Eppler 3.33 …. Cody Dickson/Eppler 4.40

Bradenton: Brandon Waddell 0.93 …. Alex McRae 2.45

West Virginia: Mitch Keller 0.86 …. Keller 1.94

STRIKEOUTS

Indianapolis: Tyler Glasnow 30 …. Glasnow 69

Altoona: Tyler Eppler 17 …. Eppler 38

Bradenton: Brandon Waddell 26 …. Yeudy Garcia 49

West Virginia: JT Brubaker 33 ….. Keller 58

WHIP (minimum 15…30 innings pitched)

Indianapolis: Jameson Taillon 0.86 …. Taillon 0.80

Altoona: Tyler Eppler 1.11 …. Eppler 1.33

Bradenton: Brandon Waddell 0.52 …. Austin Coley 1.10

West Virginia: Mitch Keller 0.62 ….. Keller 0.75

Indianapolis is different from all the other teams with pitching because their ERA and WHIP leader actually got better as the season went along. As you see, the pitching leaders are different for each category, showing just how strong the team is right now. Josh Bell has taken over as the best hitter, and I bet no one would have guessed the home run leaders in the system would be Danny Ortiz, Daniel Arribas and Tito Polo all tied with six apiece.

For Altoona, Tyler Eppler is still the best pitcher, but the stats have really taken hit due to his last two starts. While Jonathan Schwind leads the team in multiple categories on offense, he is just a bench player who barely qualified for the minimum. Erich Weiss has maintained his early stats and tops all the regulars in both average and slugging. Reese McGuire actually leads the team in on base percentage.

For Bradenton, Kevin Newman nearly kept up the same fast pace he put up in April. He is out for an unknown amount of time, but has enough plate appearances that he will remain atop the charts next month. With Brandon Waddell gone, the pitching leaders have changed a lot and there is a big difference in the stats between then and now.

For West Virginia, Mitch Keller remained the best pitcher, while Tito Polo has taken over most categories from Ke’Bryan Hayes. Polo leads the system in both homers and steals.

THIS DATE IN PIRATES HISTORY

Two former Pittsburgh Pirates players born on this date, plus a memorable Memorial Day from 101 years ago. The players born on this date were 2003 center fielder Kenny Lofton and 1983-86 outfielder Joe Orsulak. Lofton didn’t sign with the Pirates until March in 2003. He did pretty well in his time, but didn’t last long. In July, he was part of the highly unpopular Aramis Ramirez deal, going to the Chicago Cubs. Orsulak was a sixth round draft pick of the Pirates in 1980 and worked his way up the system, making his debut three years later. He batted .300 during the 1985 season, but by 1987, he was in the minors and then dealt away before the 1988 season. The Pirates got nothing in return for him, just two minor league players who never made the Majors. Orsulak went on to play another ten years before retiring.

On this date in 1915, the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs twice by matching 1-0 scores. It was Decoration Day, which is now called Memorial Day. The Pirates were at Forbes Field and the first game started at 10:30 in the morning. By 12:06, it was over and Wilbur Cooper, the team’s all-time winningest pitcher, had a complete game shutout. The crowd was shuffled out and at 3:00, they started the second game, which took all of 91 minutes to complete. Al Mamaux got the win, one of 21 that season, with eight of them being shutouts. John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
