Prospect Watch: Rehab Appearances in the GCL for Ke’Bryan Hayes and Jacob Taylor

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors and loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2016 mid-season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis had a 5-0 lead after the top of the first, with Steven Brault on the mound. Nearly six hours later, they lost 11-7. This game was delayed for two hours and 40 minutes by rain after Louisville took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Brault was already out of the game by then and the rain didn’t start until after he left. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on four hits and three walks. He didn’t have it this game and perhaps the most telling sign of that was the fact he allowed a home run to a lefty. That’s something that didn’t happen in the first 469 times he faced a lefty as a pro. There was nothing cheap about the hits and his control was off all game.

Brault has gone back and forth between great and poor recently. In his last six starts, he has three games where he combined for one earned run over 19 innings, and he has three games in which he allowed 15 earned runs in 12 innings. Having watched all six of those games, there is nothing misleading about those numbers. He was either very bad on the mound or lights out.

The Indians got on the board right away, as Alen Hanson led off the game with his eighth homer. He would later add a single and his 35th stolen base. Austin Meadows walked three times, scored twice and stole two bases. Max Moroff walked twice, giving him 78 on the season. That’s 18 more than the second highest total in the International League. Jose Osuna drove in a run with his 33rd double. Danny Ortiz hit his team-leading 15th homer.

Altoona lost 3-2 to New Hampshire on Saturday night. John Kuchno made his second start of the season and pitched great, In his last start, which was exactly one month ago, he gave up one earned run over 4.2 innings. He topped that performance in this game, giving up one run over six innings. Kuchno faced one batter over the minimum, allowing a solo homer, a single and he hit a batter. The hit batter was erased on a double play and the single turned into a caught stealing. Kuchno had a 9:2 GO/AO ratio and needed just 58 pitches to get through his outing, with 43 going for strikes.

The Curve lost this game on a two-run homer served up by Jhondaniel Medina. They took a 2-0 lead early when Elvis Escobar hit a two-run homer in the third inning, his first since joining Altoona. The Curve had five hits in the game, with the other four being singles from four different players. Jonathan Schwind had the only two walks and the only stolen base. Kevin Newman went 0-for-4 and he’s hitting .261 since being dropped to third in the batting order.

Bradenton won big over Charlotte in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Stephen Tarpley started and had a no-hitter into the fifth inning, though an error by Jerrick Suiter in the fourth allowed an unearned run to score. In the sixth, he gave up a run on a triple and a sacrifice fly. Tarpley ended up allowing one earned run in his six innings, with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts. He came into the game with a 6.35 ERA and a .309 BAA in August. Jose Regalado finished out the win with a scoreless seventh, giving Bradenton an 11-2 victory

The Marauders had 13 hits, with everyone in on the action except Connor Joe, who was still able to extend his on base streak to 18 games with a hit-by-pitch. Justin Maffei had the big hit with a fifth inning grand slam. That was followed by a homer from Pablo Reyes, his fifth of the season. In the fourth inning, Michael Suchy hit his seventh homer of the year. Tito Polo had three hits, two runs, an RBI and his 37th stolen base of the season. Jerrick Suiter had two hits, two runs and drove in a pair.

Game Two: Bradenton won the second game, getting a surprisingly good pitching performance from Buddy Borden. He came into this game with a 7.82 ERA in ten starts since being re-signed by the Pirates. After going 3.2 innings without an earned run in his first game back in the organization, Borden allowed at least two earned runs in every start since. That ended against Charlotte tonight, as he threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks. He had seven strikeouts, which is his highest total since last June when he had eight while pitching for Charlotte against Bradenton.

The offense in the 6-0 win was led by Pablo Reyes in the lead-off spot. He went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. He is 13-for-24 with five walks in his last eight games. Jerrick Suiter, Connor Joe, Christian Kelley and Justin Maffei each had two hits. Suiter drove in three runs, while Joe extended his on base streak to 19 games. Kevin Kramer hit his 27th double and drew two walks.

Dario Agrazal pitched a solid game on Saturday night, but the Power bats provided him with no offense in the 4-0 loss. In seven innings, Agrazal gave up two runs on seven hits and no walks. He struck out five batters and posted a 12:2 GO/AO ratio. He has issued four walks in his last 11 starts combined. Julio Eusebio pitched the eighth and allowed two runs. That’s significant because he had allowed a total of two runs in his last 23 outings combined, dating back to May 25th.

The Power had three hits, four walks and two hit batters. They went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and they left nine men on base. Jordan George went 1-for-2, with his ninth double, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Daniel Arribas had a single and a walk. No one else reached base more than once. Stephen Alemais had a tough first game with West Virginia, going 0-for-3 with an error, while reaching base once on a hit-by-pitch. Casey Hughston struck out three times. That gives him 131 on the season, and it’s the 14th time he has struck out three times or more in a game. He has only 13 games in which he hasn’t struck out at least once.

Morgantown lost 7-2 to the worst team in the New York-Penn League. Batavia improved to 16-42 with the win over the Black Bears. Stephan Meyer started and went four innings, allowing four earned runs. In his five previous starts, he gave up a total of five earned runs. Brandon Bingel pitched a scoreless eighth inning. He has allowed one earned run in 19 innings as a pro.

Sandy Santos provided all of the offense with his first home run of the season. Will Craig missed his third straight game after leaving the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader with an apparent minor leg injury. He limped off the field that day and went to the locker room, but returned to the bench a couple innings later. Morgantown was also without Stephen Alemais, who was promoted to West Virginia earlier in the day, leaving them with no players in this game who were considered for our mid-season top 50 prospects list.

Bristol mounted a late comeback, which came up short in their 4-2 loss to Johnson City. In the first eight innings, the Pirates had just three hits, all of them singles, and one was on a bunt. They continued to hit singles in the ninth, but four of them in the inning led to two runs. Huascar Fuentes and Adrian Valerio picked up the RBI hits, while Raul Siri and Daniel Cucjen scored the runs. Seven different players picked up one hit each and Bristol failed to draw a single walk in the game. Henrry Rosario was the only player to reach base twice, getting a hit and the lone hit-by-pitch.

Matt Eckelman started and went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and no walks, with three strikeouts. He now has a 3.24 ERA in 50 innings. Geoff Hartlieb allowed one run over two innings and Jordan Jess tossed two scoreless frames. Bristol has a 22-33 record, with 13 games left in their season, possibly 12 if they don’t make up a postponed game with Elizabethton next week.

BRADENTON, Fla. – The GCL Pirates had a tough loss today, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-2 lead, then giving up three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, only to lose in the tenth inning. Their relievers had some control issues, with Julian Villamar walking three and only getting one out. Vince Deyzel walked four in 1.1 innings, giving up the winning run, and allowing all three inherited runners to score. He was eventually bailed out by position player Andrew Walker, who stranded the bases loaded in the 10th inning.

The offense didn’t do much, with only five hits and five walks on the day, and only one extra base hit — a triple from Nelson Jorge. That big eighth inning came as a result of a walk, a single, and two errors.

The highlights today were the rehab appearances from Jacob Taylor and Ke’Bryan Hayes. Taylor was supposed to go three innings, but only went 2.2 innings and was pulled due to a lack of command. He was getting his fastball up to 94 MPH today, which is down a bit from the last outing, when he touched 95-96. I talked with Taylor about his return from Tommy John, and what has been leading to the command issues.

Hayes made his first appearance in a game since July 10th, returning from a swelling of the rhomboid muscles in his back. He only played his scheduled five innings, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. He looked smooth in the field, as usual. I talked with Hayes after the game, and he said his back is feeling better, and discussed how the injury was impacting his hitting more than the fielding.

Domingo Robles is the scheduled starter on Monday, making his first appearance since August 3rd, after missing the team bus in his next scheduled start on the road. It appears his punishment for that is over. This game is at home. – Tim Williams

The DSL Pirates lost 3-2 to the Cubs, as Roger Santana had his shortest outing of the season. Santana has been one of the best pitchers in the league, but he didn’t have it in this game, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk in 3.2 innings. He now has a 1.66 ERA in 14 starts. Oliver Garcia followed him and allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings. He has now gone 11 innings over his last four appearances without giving up an earned run. Armando Bustamante was next and he threw a scoreless inning, giving him 9.1 shutout innings over his last seven appearances.

The Pirates had seven hits in the game, but they went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Sherten Apostel and Francisco Mepris each had two hits. Mepris stole his 11th base, while Apostel picked up his seventh double. Rudy Guzman hit his sixth triple and drew a walk. Rodolfo Castro hit his 15th double. Kevin Sanchez had a single and a walk.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
