Report: Cole to Skip Start, Get Elbow Examined

Published:

Gerrit Cole will not make his scheduled start Monday against the Chicago Cubs, and will have his elbow examined instead, according to a report by Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Cole gave up five runs in five innings in his last start Aug. 25. Drew Hutchison is in line to make the start Saturday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

UPDATE 10:49 p.m:

Left-hander Steven Brault will start on Monday in place of Cole. Brault has a 3.60 ERA and a 4.35 FIP in two starts with the Pirates this season. With Triple-A Indianapolis, he has a 3.91 ERA and a 3.56 FIP in 15 starts.

His last two starts haven’t been great, as he gave up six runs in 4.1 innings Aug. 20 and then three runs in just two innings Aug. 25. He will be pitching on just three days of rest following that two-inning start.

UPDATE 11:40 PM: Steven Brault will get the start on Monday.
