Last night, Tyler Glasnow was removed from his rehab start with Altoona after the coaching staff noticed some strange movements he was making with his shoulder, and his pitch inefficiency. He left to be evaluated by the Pirates’ team doctors in Pittsburgh, with that evaluation taking place today. He has been cleared to throw a bullpen on Tuesday with Altoona, per a Pirates press release.
This is a good sign, as they wouldn’t have him throwing so soon if there was a serious concern. Typically, when there’s anything even close to serious, they will stop for a few days, give a player a break, and then have him throw off flat ground to see how he feels. Having him throw a bullpen two days after his rehab start is pretty much the standard approach when a player is on a five-day schedule, with an off-day after he pitches, followed by a bullpen on the second day.
It’s unclear right now where Glasnow’s rehab will go from here. The fact that he’s throwing the bullpen with Altoona suggests he will stay with the team and continue rehabbing with them, as they’re currently in the New England area, and on the road the rest of the week. It would be strange to send him to be with that team if he wasn’t continuing that rehab assignment. Overall, this is a good sign after a concerning situation last night.
