Tyler Glasnow to Make a Rehab Start in Altoona on Sunday

Published:

PITTSBURGH —
After a successful three-inning sim game at PNC Park Tuesday, Tyler Glasnow will report to Double-A Altoona for a rehab start on Sunday. The right-hander reported no issues with his injured throwing shoulder, but said it was difficult to self-evaluate his performance given the circumstances.

“[You just try] not to be too hard on yourself, especially early on, and just to see how the shoulder feels and make sure that there’s no pain or anything like that,” he said. “Everything checked out. There’s no pain. Everything was coming out nicely.”

Glasnow had made two starts with the Pirates before his injury, and especially in the second start, it was clear that he still has some things to work on.

“I’ve been working with [pitching coach Ray Searage] on some stuff, some mechanical things,” Glasnow said. “I’ve been feeling really good.”

The timing of the injury put a hold on his plans to really focus on the issues at hand, particularly controlling the running game and commanding his breaking pitches. But it’s also been an opportunity with an extended stay under the eyes of Searage, and the two have been putting in a lot of work on making mechanical adjustments while rehabbing at the same time.

“It was definitely frustrating,” he said. “I just wanted to come up and pitch. Looking back, it was frustrating, but there’s nothing you can do about it. Thankfully, it wasn’t a super-crazy injury or anything and I’ve been able to bounce back quickly. I’m just going to take this time, everything I’ve learned from Ray, take it back there and hopefully it’s going to make me better.”

Glasnow did not say how many rehab starts he will require before being able to rejoining the rotation or how many innings he is expected to throw in his first rehab start. Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk typically addresses the media to discuss such matters Wednesday afternoons.

Altoona hosts Reading at 6:05 p.m. Sunday evening.
