Clint Hurdle Makes Playing Time Adjustments With the Pirates Eliminated

Published:

PITTSBURGH — With the Pirates officially eliminated from postseason contention on Tuesday night, manager Clint Hurdle has made some changes to his lineup going forward.

• RHP Neftali Feliz won’t pitch for the rest of the season and the Pirates are “backing away” from catcher Francisco Cervelli.

• The Pirates will “definitely” look to get Alen Hanson some playing time at second base.

• SS Jordy Mercer (forearm strain) will be “monitored” going forward. Sounds like he’ll see minimal playing time.

• Tyler Glasnow and Chad Kuhl will pitch the first two games of the St. Louis series. The last game, which would be Ryan Vogelsong’s turn, is TBA. Vogelsong is still an option, Hurdle just hasn’t made a decision yet.

• OF Gregory Polanco (stiff neck) will not play Wednesday and will be evaluated as to whether or not he will return this season. CF Starling Marte is available to pinch hit. Hurdle said he is “running out of days” to make a return to the field.

The Pirates will face the Toronto Blue Jays in Montreal for two preseason games next March 31 and April 1. The Pirates last played in Montreal June 25, 2003. Hurdle played in Montreal and is excited for the opportunity to play a preseason game in a packed house, real-game atmosphere, as the Pirates did in Indianapolis this season.

“I was fortunate enough to play in Montreal,” Hurdle said. “It’s a Great city. Old Montreal is beautiful. When Neal first brought it to my attention much my earlier in the year, we talked about the opportunity to go play in a packed house. The two games we played this year were received very, very well. There was a lot of excitement. You know you’re going to play. You don’t have to worry about weather. It will be a good way to be energized and kick some things off.”
