AFL: Connor Joe Drives in Two Runs in a One-Sided Loss

Published:

The Surprise Saguaros lost a one-sided game by a 10-4 score to Mesa on Friday afternoon, dropping them to 1-2 (plus a tie) on the season. Connor Joe was the only player from the Pirates in the game. He batted ninth and played third base. This was his second game of the AFL season. He played left field on Wednesday. Eric Wood and Jin-De Jhang both had off today after reaching base three times each on Thursday.

In the second inning, Joe gave Surprise a 2-1 lead with a two-run single. He struck out swinging to end the fourth inning, then flew out to center field to lead-off the seventh inning. Joe would then strike out for a second time, this time with two runners on and no outs in the ninth. His team added two runs, but a double play ended the comeback attempt. Joe committed a fielding error in the third inning, his first of the season. He went 1-for-5 with a solo homer in his first game.

Surprise returns home tomorrow to face Scottsdale in an afternoon game.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
