AFL: Eric Wood Drives Home Three Runs in Saguaros Victory

Published:

In the Arizona Fall League on Saturday afternoon, the Surprise Saguaros defeated Scottsdale by an 8-1 score. That gave them a 2-2 record for the first week, which doesn’t include a tie on Wednesday.

Eric Wood was the only Pirate in the starting lineup. He batted fifth and played left field. In his first at-bat, Wood came up with two outs and two runners in scoring position. He lined a single to right field to bring them both home for an early 2-0 lead. He came up with two runners on again in the third inning and grounded into a force out, though a throwing error on the play allowed him to reach base and a run to score. He was not credited with an RBI. Wood lined out to center field in the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, Wood hit an RBI single on a line drive to right field. That gave his team n 8-1 lead, though it also resulted in the third out when the runner from second base was thrown out at home. In the next half inning, Wood repaid the favor by picking up an outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home for the final out. Wood also made his first outfield error earlier in this game, dropping a fly ball in the third. The next ball was hit to him and he handled that one for the third out of the inning. In the eighth inning, he struck out to end the frame, giving him a 2-for-5 night.

Surprise has off on Sunday. They return Monday afternoon to host Salt River.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
