AFL: Jin-De Jhang Helps Out on Offense and Defense in 2-1 Victory

Published:

On Wednesday night in the Arizona Fall League, the Surprise Saguaros won 2-1 over Scottsdale to move to 4-3 on the season.

Jin-De Jhang was the only Pirates in the lineup. He batted eighth and caught for the second time. In his first at-bat, Jhang grounded out to second base to lead off the third inning. He was actually at the plate in the second inning with two outs and a runner on, but that runner was thrown out trying to steal second base. In the fifth inning, Jhang tied the score (1-1) on a sacrifice fly hit out to Tim Tebow in left field. Jhang grounded out to first base leading off the seventh inning, then walked in the ninth. He is 4-for-13 with two walks and no strikeouts in four games.

Jhang committed an error on catcher interference in the sixth inning, which didn’t lead to any damage. He also threw out both runners attempting to steal in this game, though I have to mention that one was on a hit-and-run, and it was a catcher who didn’t attempt a single stolen base in 123 games during the regular season.

Surprise returns home Thursday for an afternoon game against Peoria.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
