AFL: Surprise Shuts Out Glendale 2-0 on Monday Afternoon

Published:

On Monday afternoon in the Arizona Fall League, the Surprise Saguaros won 2-0 over Glendale. Surprise now has a 10-7 record (plus one tie) with 14 games left on the schedule.

Eric Wood was the only Pirate in the game on Monday. He batted second and played third base. He flew out to left field in the first inning. In the third inning, he was the third of five straight Surprise hitters to strike out. Wood reached on an infield single in the sixth inning. He grounded out in the eighth, leaving him 1-for-4 on the day. He had just two plays in the field and handled them both.

Our live coverage of the AFL will begin tomorrow, as Surprise hosts Mesa in an afternoon game. We will have features and information on all seven Pittsburgh Pirates in the league. Tim Williams will be covering the Fall-Stars game on Saturday. If you missed it from earlier, Edgar Santana and Connor Joe were selected for the game.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
