AFL: Surprise Wins Big on Opening Day

Published:

The Arizona Fall League opened up on Tuesday afternoon. For a preview of the seven Pirates in the league this year, check out our write-up here. After playing for Scottsdale in 2014 and Glendale in 2015, the Pirates are on the Surprise Saguaros this season. Surprise took the opening game by an 11-2 score.

Jin-De Jhang was the only Pirate in the Opening Day lineup. He batted seventh and was the DH. In his first at-bat, Jhang flew out to left field to end the second inning. In the third inning, he popped out to third base with the bases loaded, ending the frame. In the sixth inning, he grounded out to second base. Jhang singled with two outs in the seventh to load the bases, setting up the next batter for a two-run double to make the score 8-1. In the eighth, he grounded into a double play to end the inning, leaving him 1-for-5 on the day.

Surprise goes on the road tomorrow afternoon to face Peoria. That should be a busier game for the Pirates, as Connor Joe and Eric Wood were on the bench today, and none of the four pitchers saw action in this game.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
