Sean Rodriguez Agrees to Deal with Atlanta Braves

Published:

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a two-year deal with Sean Rodriguez that will pay him over $11M total. The deal is still pending a physical. We have heard over the last couple weeks that the Pirates were one of either five or six teams in pursuit of Rodriguez, with the Los Angeles Dodgers also mentioned numerous times.

Rodriguez spent the last two seasons with the Pirates, posting a .642 OPS in 2015, followed by a .270/.349/.510 slash line this year in 140 games. He played at least ten games at six different positions this season, including all four infield spots and both corner outfield positions. He also spent some time in center field off the bench.

After acquiring him in a trade prior to the 2015 season, the Pirates brought him back on a one-year, $2.5M deal for this season. His strong performance paid off with a two-year deal in which he will receive (per season) more than twice what he made this year.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
