The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed first baseman/outfielder Joey Terdoslavich to a minor league deal with an invite to MLB Spring Training. Terdoslavich has spent a brief amount of time in the majors with the Braves, getting 162 plate appearances over three seasons from 2013-15, and combining for a .221/.296/.324 line.
Terdoslavich was named the 11th best prospect in the Braves’ system by Baseball America in 2012. That was the year he first made the jump to Triple-A, where his career has stalled a bit. Over five seasons in Triple-A, he has a .258/.334/.410 line. Last year he played in Baltimore’s farm system and had a .246/.349/.419 line in Double-A, with a .426 OPS in a brief appearance in Triple-A.
I can’t see Terdoslavich being anything more than an organizational guy in Triple-A, and my guess is that his work will mostly involve the outfield. The Pirates have Jason Rogers for their first base spot in Triple-A, but are short on outfielders, especially after losing Willy Garcia on waivers. A lot would have to happen for Terdoslavich to get a call to the majors, starting first with him rediscovering what was working so well for him a few years ago, and followed by a lot of injuries to guys like Josh Bell, John Jaso, David Freese, and Rogers.
