Prospect Watch: Successful Return for Brandon Waddell

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time (Tyler Glasnow, Trevor Williams, Alen Hanson, Jose Osuna), or loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2017 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Brandon Waddell made his return from a forearm strain that had him out for nearly a month and it was a very successful first game back. He came into the day scheduled to go three innings and started the first by retiring the side on nine pitches, all of them strikes. Waddell got two soft grounders and a strikeout. In the second inning, Akron came close to collecting an extra-base hit, as their fifth place hitter drove a ball off the outfielder wall, just foul down the left field line. Waddell ended up striking him out and getting out of the second on an easy grounder to Kevin Newman and two strikeouts.

In the third inning, he started with two more strikeouts before issuing a five-pitch walk. Waddell picked up his sixth strikeout on the next hitter, ending his day. He faced ten batters total, struck out six and had three easy grounders. He threw 43 pitches total, 29 for strikes, and he was sitting low-90s, reaching at least 93 MPH according to the Akron announcers. Waddell got injured in his first start of the season when he went four innings and allowed four runs.

Altoona lost this game 3-2 on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth. They tied the scored up in the top of the ninth, as Kevin Kramer and Connor Joe both singled, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Jordan Luplow. The Curve scored their first run on a sacrifice fly as well. Pablo Reyes drove in Wyatt Mathisen, who doubled, then moved to third base on a Tomas Morales single.

Kevin Kramer extended his season-long on base streak to 22 games with a sixth inning walk. Kevin Newman went 0-for-3 with a walk. He is 9-for-42 (.214) in his last ten games. Connor Joe went 2-for-3 with a walk, extending his hit streak to 11 games. His average has gone from .194 to .300 during the streak.

Jared Lakind allowed two runs in his two innings of work. He started the season with seven shutout innings, but he has now allowed six runs in his last 4.2 innings. Miguel Rosario threw a scoreless eighth, then allowed the winning run in the ninth. It was the first run he gave up since his season debut back on April 8th.

Bradenton won 9-4 on Thursday night over St Lucie, as everyone in the starting lineup picked up at least one hit. Pedro Vasquez started, coming into the game with a 2.10 ERA, which is the best among all of the starters. He also displayed some impressive control during his first five starts, allowing just three walks in five starts. Vasquez didn’t have it on this night, laboring through five innings on seven hits and two walks, while constantly going deep in counts. Bret Helton followed with two shutout innings, then Daniel Zamora came on in the eight and faced three batters before leaving with an apparent injury. Sam Street came on and finished out the Bradenton win.

Bradenton had runners on base all game, with 12 hits, five walks, a hit batter and a couple runners reaching on errors. Logan Hill started the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning, his seventh of the season. Kevin Krause added a two-run shot in the sixth inning. In the third inning, Casey Hughston hit a two-run single.

Mitchell Tolman had a nice game, going 2-for-2, with a single, double, walk, HBP and four runs scored. Cole Tucker had three singles and an RBI. Ke’Bryan Hayes was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Will Craig had the day off.

He was also coming off his worst outing, giving up six runs over 3.2 innings in his last start. This was an impressive bounce back, as he went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks, while picking up seven strikeouts. Marvel threw 55 of his 72 pitches for strikes, and posted a 5:3 GO/AO ratio. He now has a 3.41 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 29 innings. Matt Frawley followed Marvel with two scoreless frames to lower his ERA to 1.32, then Mike Wallace finished off the win with a scoreless ninth.

Carlos Munoz reached base in all four times up, collecting three singles and a hit-by-pitch. Stephen Alemais was 1-for-5 with a run scored, an RBI, and his fifth stolen base.
