Prospect Watch: Control Issues Plague Clay Holmes Again

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time (Jose Osuna), or loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2017 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis was leading this game 3-2 in the fifth inning and they ended up losing a laugher by a 12-4 score.

Clay Holmes started and had some control issues from the beginning. That’s what hurt him in his last game as well, when he couldn’t make it through the first inning due to his pitch count. He walked six batters total and the only highlight was an 8:0 GO/AO ratio. He limited the damage to two runs through four innings and one of those runs came with a little controversy.

The outfield wall in Charlotte is about ten feet high in left field, then it has a railing about five feet high where people can stand. The home run mark is at the top of the wall. Danny Hayes hit a ball that Chris Bostick looked like he thought he could catch at the wall. Instead, a fan reached over the railing and caught it with an outstretched glove. It was hard to tell from multiple replay angles if the ball would have hit over the home run line, but Bostick sure didn’t think so and argued for interference. The homer stood.

In the fifth inning, things fell apart for Holmes and two relievers of note. He gave up a walk and a triple before being removed with one out. Casey Sadler came on and allowed the inherited runner to score, along with three other unearned runs due to a two-out error by Erich Weiss. Sadler was replaced and Antonio Bastardo served up a three-run homer to Yoan Moncada. Brett McKinney had a tough time in mop-up duty, allowing four runs on seven hits in two innings.

On offense, Chris Bostick went 2-for-5 with his 19th double and two runs scored. Phil Gosselin drove in two runs, while Eric Wood had a single, a walk and an RBI. Gift Ngoepe went 0-for-4, leaving him 9-for-52 (.173) since being sent back to Indianapolis. Austin Meadows had the night off.

Altoona had their game suspended in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-0 lead. The game will be finished tomorrow in it’s entirety, followed by a seven inning game. We will post a full update tomorrow. For now, since his game is done, Austin Coley went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and no walks, with four strikeouts. Jordan Luplow had a single and a double, driving in one run. Elvis Escobar had a single, a walk and an RBI.

West Virginia lost 8-2 in a strange start for James Marvel. Through the first ten batters of the game, Marvel had a perfect game going. Seven batters later, he allowed six hits, five runs and recorded one out. The big damage came on a three-run homer, which was followed by a bunt base hit to end his game. Dylan Prohoroff was able to strand the inherited runner to end the fourth inning, but then he allowed three runs of his own in the fifth inning.

While the first two pitchers had a tough time, Blake Cederlind put together a terrific outing. He retired all nine batters he faced, five by strikeouts. That’s coming from a pitcher who allowed 11 earned runs over his previous four innings.

The offense had four doubles among their six hits, but scored just two runs. Those doubles came from Albert Baur, Ty Moore, Alexis Bastardo and Brent Gibbs. Bastardo drove in both runs with his double. Moore’s double was his 15th of the season.

The DSL Pirates won 7-2 on Friday, as starter Oliver Garcia continued to put up solid starts to begin the season. Garcia allowed his first earned run of the year in this game, which was his third start of the season, giving him an 0.60 ERA. We covered him in our The Twenty article after he threw ten shutout innings last week. In five innings, which is the DSL limit for Pirate pitchers, he gave up four hits, two walks and struck out four batters. Francis Del Orbe and Saul de la Cruz each followed with two shutout innings to seal the victory.

On offense, the Pirates had just two RBIs in this game, as the Astros defense committed seven errors. Their pitchers also walked nine batters, so there wasn’t much hitting being done despite scoring seven runs. The Pirates had five hits total, and just one for extra bases. Kyle Simmons had two hits, a walk and two runs scored. Ronaldo Paulino had a double, walk and a run scored.Williams Calderon had a single, two walks, a run scored and an RBI.

Top prospect Jean Eusebio went 0-for-3 with two walks. He committed his third throwing error, while also picking up his second outfield assist.
