Prospect Watch: Ike Schlabach Continues Recent Success with Six Shutout Innings

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time (Max Moroff), or loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2017 Mid-Season Update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis won 10-2 in a game that they trailed most of the way. Drew Hutchison started and allowed two runs in the second inning. He settled down after that and ended with a line that included just three hits and one walk over six innings. Dovydas Neverauskas picked up the save in long relief, helping to make up for the loss of Steven Brault yesterday, which resulted in four relievers doing all of the work in last night’s game. Neverauskas tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit, three walks and he had three strikeouts. It’s the second time he has gone three innings this season, and the 59 pitches is his highest total since he was a starter in West Virginia in early 2015.

Everyone on the offense contributed in this game, as the Indians put up six runs in the seventh and another four in the eighth. Danny Ortiz had the big day, collecting three hits, including his 21st double and ninth homer. The home run was an eighth inning grand slam. Kevin Newman had three hits, including his first Triple-A double. Elias Diaz drove in a pair with a single. Phil Gosselin and Erich Weiss each had a pair of hits.

Jordan Luplow had two hits, including his third double for Indianapolis. In the eighth inning, he was hit by a pitch and had to leave for a pinch-runner. He was on his left hand/wrist and was in some serious pain before walking off with the trainer. Brian Peloza should be able to get an update on his condition tomorrow night when they return home.

Altoona won 5-3 on Sunday and got a strong start from JT Brubaker, who has been pitching much better lately. After giving up one run over five innings in a start earlier this week, Brubaker went six innings in this game, giving up just one run. He held first place Bowie hitless until the fifth inning, when three straight singles found holes in the infield, but failed to produce a run. The only run he allowed came on a lead-off homer in the sixth. Brubaker threw 100 pitches on the day, with 63% going for strikes. Brandon Cumpton and Tate Scioneaux each allowed a run, but Scioneaux held on for the save.

Altoona got two hits from most of the players in the lineup. Anderson Feliz, Jerrick Suiter, Logan Hill, Jin-De Jhang and Pablo Reyes each collected a pair of hits. Jhang hit two doubles, while Wyatt Mathisen collected his 15th double and Hill picked up his fifth double since joining the Curve. The big hit was a two-run homer by Feliz in the fourth inning. Cole Tucker had the day off.

Bradenton won 9-2 over Clearwater on Sunday afternoon, with Will Craig and Kevin Krause providing the big offense. Craig hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his sixth of the season. He was far from down at that point. He had an RBI single in the third inning, then singled and scored in the fourth, walked and scored in the sixth. Craig has a .290/.390/.416 slash line in 91 games and now ranks fourth in the FSL in OBP.

Krause had three singles, a double and he drove in four runs, twice scoring Craig. Ke’Bryan Hayes had two hits, including his sixth triple, and he drove in a pair of runs. He ranks fourth in the league in triples, tying Casey Hughston and Cole Tucker for the team lead. Jordan George went 2-for-4 with his 13th double. He raised his average to .301 and he extended his hitting streak to 19 games. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit.

Bret Helton pitched terrific in Taylor Hearn’s rotation spot, allowing one run over five innings. He had three strikeouts, no walks and needed just 65 pitches, with 47 going for strikes. Logan Sendelbach closed out the game with the four inning save. He gave up one run on two hits and posted a 6:2 GO/AO ratio.

West Virginia won 7-1 behind a terrific outing from Luis Escobar. He went six innings in this game, allowing one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out nine batters. It’s his highest strikeout total since his fourth start in April. Escobar struck out the side in the first inning and finished by striking out three of the final four hitters. He gave up a run in the third inning on a wild pitch, but did not give up another base hit after the lead-off batter in the third reached on a single. He now has 118 strikeouts on the season, which leads both the SAL and the entire Pirates farm system.

The Power were without Adrian Valerio, who landed on the DL this morning after an ankle injury last night. Yoel Gonzalez and Garrett Brown picked up the slack on offense, each collecting three hits. Gonzalez is hitting .353 with the Power after batting .333 with Morgantown before his promotion, though I’ll note that he has just 56 total at-bats. Brown is now hitting .333 in 23 games with the Power. On the somewhat comical side, Carlos Munoz slotted into the lead-off spot in place of Valerio. Munoz is a solid on base man, but might be the slowest lead-off hitter ever. He went 0-for-4, doing a nice job of not clogging the bases.

Coming into Sunday’s game, Ike Schlabach allowed one run over 18 innings in his last three starts combined. So it may be somewhat surprising that he had his best outing of the season on Sunday. He threw six shutout innings on one hit and one walk, with three strikeouts. The only hit he gave up was a one out bunt single in the first inning. Schlabach came into the game with the fourth best ERA (1.97) in the New York-Penn League and he lowered that mark to 1.66 through 38 innings. He has given up just 21 hits.

Morgantown won 7-2 behind the bats of Chris Sharpe and Raul Hernandez. Sharpe capped off the scoring with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his first as a pro. He also had a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, driving in four runs on the day. Hernandez hasn’t seen much playing time since joining Morgantown, but he is now hitting .500 after going 3-for-3 with a double and HBP. With apologies to my favorite basketball player ever, the Human Highlight Reel Bligh Madris had two hits, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Dylan Busby collected his fifth double.

Bristol lost 10-9 on Sunday night to Burlington. Domingo Robles has been pitching well so far this season, but the 19-year-old lefty had some major issues this night. He lasted just 1.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning. He was already at 45 pitches when he was removed. The only thing good you can say is that three of the hits he allowed were infield hits. There was also an error in there which led to an unearned run, otherwise he got hit hard in his brief outing.

Cuban pitcher Dany Hernandez followed Robles and he didn’t do much better, allowing three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. After that, the bullpen settled down and three pitchers combined to toss four shutout innings, which allowed Bristol to nearly make a comeback.

It wasn’t just Burlington hitting in this game, both teams had great days on offense. Yondry Contreras had a big day, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and his second home run of the season. Edison Lantigua had two hits, including his seventh double. Between the two of them, they went 5-for-10 with five strikeouts, so it was all or nothing.

Melvin Jimenez had four hits, giving him a .311 average on the season. Luis Benitez drove in three runs, while Jason Delay, Huascar Fuentes and Ben Bengtson each had a pair of hits.
