Winter Leagues: Updated Stats for Pittsburgh Pirates in Winter Ball

Published:

A slow day in winter ball on Monday due to just one game in the Dominican, plus the league in Mexico held it’s All-Star game. I included stats for all of the active Pirates in winter ball at the bottom. I left off Anderson Feliz and Carlos Munoz, who are minor league free agents, though we will still update them in articles in case they re-sign.

As for Monday’s action, we start in Venezuela, where Jose Osuna played his third game. He went 0-for-4 and is now 2-for-11 with a single, double and one intentional walk. All three games so far have been as the designated hitter.

Elvis Escobar started for the first time in nearly a week and went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He is hitting .263 over 33 games, with four doubles, one triple, an 8:21 BB/SO ratio and two steals in five attempts.

In Colombia, we have an update on 17-year-old shortstop Francisco Acuna. On Friday, he went 1-for-4 with a single. On Saturday, he was 0-for-2 with a walk. He went 1-for-4 with a single on Sunday. Through 12 games, he is hitting .147/.293/.176, with a double and six walks. Acuna hasn’t hit much, but he has reached base in 11 of his 12 games. The only game in which he didn’t reach base safely was the sixth game of the season when he received just two plate appearances. On defense, he has committed three errors in 52 chances.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
