Winter Leagues: Rodriguez Extends Streak; Suchy Plays in Australian League All-Star Game

Published:

Tuesday was a slow day of action around winter ball, so we combined the last two days into one article.

Tuesday was more of a news day than action. Starling Marte had his season ended early by the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a hand injury. Jerrick Suiter joined his winter ball team in Mexico, then didn’t get into the lineup either of the last two days. He will likely start playing soon. Jose Osuna’s game was rained out and then on Wednesday the Pirates shut him down for the winter. Tony Harris, an international scout for the Pirates, was named the All-Star game manager for Team Australia. So on Thursday he got to coach against his own player on the World Team, Michael Suchy (see below for results).

In the limited action from Tuesday, Anderson Feliz went 1-for-4 with a double in the Dominican.

In Mexico, Carlos Munoz went 0-for-4.

In Venezuela, Elvis Escobar played the last two innings in left field for his team without getting an at-bat.

In Colombia, Francisco Acuna went 1-for-3 with a run scored. He also stole a base for the second straight game after not attempting a single steal in the first 28 games. Acuna is hitting .231/.364/.308 through 30 games.

Wednesday

In Venezuela, Elvis Escobar took part in a doubleheader. He didn’t start game one. Escobar pinch-ran in the sixth inning, remained in the game on defense in the left field and then struck out in his only at-bat. He started game two, and went 0-for-4 with a run scored. Escobar is now hitting .268/.326/.327 in 56 games.

Engelb Vielma also took part in that same doubleheader. He started game one and went 0-for-1, with a HBP and a run scored. His team had just three runners in the seven-inning game and he scored the only run. Vielma committed his eighth error of the season, which is a high total for someone who has always been a plus defender throughout his career. He was used only as a pinch-runner in the second game. Vielma is hitting .239/.316/.307 through 32 games.

In the Dominican, Richard Rodriguez took the loss, but extended his streak of no earned runs to 12 games. In one inning, he allowed one unearned run on one hit, with no walks and one strikeout. In his last 12 games combined, he has a 0.00 ERA in 11.2 innings, with seven hits, one walk and 14 strikeouts.

Anderson Feliz went 2-for-3 with his third triple, an RBI and a walk. He’s hitting .308/.367/.444 in 39 games and still looking for a 2018 job.

In Mexico, Carlos Munoz went 3-for-4 with his ninth double, a run scored and an RBI. He is hitting .276/.374/.381 through 57 games and he’s still looking for a 2018 job.

In the Australian league All-Star game on Thursday, Michael Suchy went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in his team’s 6-4 win.
