Pirates Designate Shane Carle and Engelb Vielma For Assignment

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Shane Carle and infielder Engelb Vielma for assignment, per a team press release. These moves are the corresponding moves for yesterday’s trades, which added Colin Moran, Joe Musgrove, and Michael Feliz to the 40-man roster.

Carle was originally drafted by the Pirates in 2013, and was later traded to the Rockies for Rob Scahill. He was placed on waivers by the Rockies earlier this month, and was claimed back by the Pirates. If they can get him through waivers, he could be a depth option for the MLB bullpen in 2018.

Vielma was claimed by the Pirates in December, and was claimed by the Phillies earlier in the offseason. He could provide depth for the team at second, third, and shortstop, with the shortstop position being his primary position. However, because he’s already been claimed multiple times this offseason, I could see him getting claimed by another team.
