WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Pichardo was reportedly hitting 96 shortly after the Pirates signed him, but he hasn’t thrown that hard as a pro.  After he signed his fastball sat more often in the low-90s and by 2017 was only in the upper-80s.  He has a good slider but erratic command.

2015
DSL:  3-3-0, 7.24 ERA, 1.95 WHIP, 41.0 IP, 3.7 BB/9, 6.6 K/9

The Pirates tried Pichardo in the rotation in the DSL, but he had a rough debut.  His control wasn’t bad, but opponents batted .346 against him.  He ended up starting eight games and pitching six times in relief.

2016
DSL:  1-3-0, 3.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 51.0 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 5.6 K/9

Back in the DSL, Pichardo made substantial improvements, although he still had only a fair season.  The Pirates used him mainly as a starter.

2017
R:  0-1-1, 4.24 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 23.1 IP, 3.1 BB/9, 3.5 K/9
R+:  1-2-0, 9.58 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, 10.1 IP, 6.1 BB/9, 7.0 K/9

Pichardo spent roughly the first month of the season at Bristol, except for one game in the GCL.  He struggled badly and the Pirates eventually sent him to the GCL for good.  He wasn’t very effective there, either, in particular striking out very few hitters.

Sometimes pitchers develop physically in ways that cause their stuff to go backwards.  That seems to be happening with Pichardo.  He could try Bristol again in 2018.
