WTM’S PLAYER PROFILE

Feliz spent six seasons in the Yankees’ farm system, advancing only as far as high A.  He played only sparingly in his last three seasons, 2012-14, while serving numerous stints on the disabled list.  The Yankees finally released him and he spent a season in independent ball.  Feliz has hit passably much of the time, with usually good OBPs and occasionally some doubles power, but he’s struck out a lot.  He’s been primarily a second baseman, spending only very limited time at short, which could indicate that Yankees never regarded him as a real prospect.  Feliz also missed a significant amount of time with the Yankees due to Tommy John surgery, as well as hip and forearm injuries.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league contract for 2016.

2009
DSL:  254/354/352, 142 AB, 5 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, 21 BB, 36 K, 7-9 SB

Feliz did a good job of getting on base in his debut.  He played second base.  The Yankees released him after the season and re-signed him shortly into the 2010 season.

2010
R:  274/324/439, 198 AB, 9 2B, 6 3B, 4 HR, 15 BB, 44 K, 11-18 SB
A+:  280/357/440, 25 AB, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 BB, 9 K, 2-2 SB

The Yankees moved Feliz up to the GCL and he had a solid season, showing decent power.  He did strike out a lot.  He played mostly second, with a little time at short.

2011
A:  217/305/333, 438 AB, 27 2B, 3 3B, 6 HR, 52 BB, 129 K, 16-23 SB

The Yankees jumped Feliz to full season ball and, apart from a little gap power, he struggled at the plate.  He had a good walk total, but struck out more than once every three and a half at-bats.  He played second exclusively.

2012
A:  315/398/466, 73 AB, 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 9 BB, 23 K, 6-7 SB
A+:  239/350/343, 67 AB, 5 2B, 1 3B, 12 BB, 19 K, 5-7 SB

Feliz went back to low A and got off to a good start through 22 games.  He was on and off the disabled list through much of May and June, spent July in high A, then missed all of August.  He got on base at a good rate in high A over 23 games.  Between the two levels, he again played mostly second.

2013
A+:  265/340/346, 136 AB, 4 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 16 BB, 37 K, 4-8 SB

The Yankees sent Feliz back to high A, but he missed most of the season, getting into only 36 games.  He played mostly third.

2014
R:  353/500/588, 17 AB, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 BB, 8 K, 4-4 SB
A+
:  190/224/324, 79 AB, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 24 K, 1-2 SB

Feliz again missed much of the season, getting into only 23 games in high A, plus a rehab stint in the GCL.

2015
IND:  275/344/415, 306 AB, 12 2B, 5 3B, 7 HR, 33 BB, 84 K, 14-18 SB

The Yankees released Feliz shortly before the season and he caught on with Lancaster in the Atlantic League.  He hit well there, while playing mainly at third.

2016
AA:  256/325/378, 347 AB, 22 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 35 BB, 88 K, 7-8 SB

Feliz spent the season at Altoona.  He initially shared time at shortstop with Chris Diaz, but he didn’t show good range, or defensive skills generally.  He ended up in a utility role, playing between 12 and 18 games each at first, second and third, and in the outfield.  Possibly because he was one of the few hitters on the team who didn’t start the season in a slump, the Pirates seemed to want to keep his bat in the lineup.  Feliz was much more effective batting left-handed than right-handed, putting up OPS figures of .734 and .566, respectively.

2017
AA:  246/343/366, 175 AB, 9 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 26 BB, 46 K, 9-13 SB
AAA:  209/257/328, 134 AB, 7 2B, 3 HR, 9 BB, 41 K, 3-4 SB

Because he spent 2015 in independent ball and re-signed partway into the 2010 season, Feliz hadn’t spent enough seasons in the minors to become a free agent yet.  He opened the season at Indianapolis in a utility role and ended up dividing his time evenly between there and Altoona.  He played every position except pitcher and catcher.  He hit about the same as usual in AA but struggled in AAA.

Feliz will be a free agent after the season.
