Pirates demote Brandon Jones, sign Yung Chi Chen

The Pittsburgh Pirates have demoted outfielder Brandon Jones from AAA Indianapolis to AA Altoona, and have also signed Yung Chi Chen, who was recently with the Oakland Athletics.  The moves bring Altoona’s roster up to 24, after seeing the promotions of Daniel Moskos and Alex Presley to Indianapolis leave the team shorthanded. According to an official release, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed 24th round draft pick Justin Howard.  Howard, a senior from the University of New Mexico, hit for a .456 average in his senior season, with ten homers in 261 at-bats. In 2010, as a college sophomore, Anthony Rendon hit for a .394/.530/.801 line in 226 at-bats for the University of Rice.  He tied for second in the NCAA with 26 home runs, and was named the NCAA Player of the Year by Baseball America.  Rendon is the heavy favorite to go first overall in the 2011 draft.
