Robinzon Diaz released, Jeff Karstens and Justin Thomas to AAA

Robinzon Diaz, Jeff Karstens, and Justin Thomas were all designated for assignment ten days ago, and all three cleared waivers today.  The Pittsburgh Pirates unconditionally released Diaz, while sending Karstens and Thomas to AAA, with invites to Spring Training. Diaz was apparently unhappy being behind Ryan Doumit and Jason Jaramillo on the depth chart, and would have opted for minor league free agency had he been sent to AAA....

Pirates sign Wilfredo Ledezma and international free agents

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed left handed pitcher Wilfredo Ledezma to a minor league contract today.  Ledezma, who turns 29 in January, has spent parts of seven seasons in the majors, with a career 5.17 ERA, a 6.2 K/9 ratio, and a 4.4 BB/9 ratio.  Ledezma isn’t much of a LOOGY, with a career .292 BAA versus left handers in the majors, compared to a .274 BAA versus right handers. 2009 Rule 5 Draft Preview: Catchers

The 2009 Rule 5 Draft will be held at the Winter Meetings on December 10th, 2009.  The Pirates have taken a player in the Rule 5 draft in each of the last two seasons, selecting Evan Meek in 2008, and Donald Veal in 2009.  Meek is now one of the top relief options in the Pirates’ bullpen, while Veal looked very promising in the 2009 Arizona Fall League after a year of work with Joe Kerrigan.
