First Pitch: Why I Don’t Like the Trade Deadline

Earlier today I did a sort of trade deadline preview, although there’s not much to work with this year. The only player that the Pittsburgh Pirates have been connected to was traded tonight when the Angels acquired Huston Street. That’s not something I’d lose sleep over, as the price was very high, as it usually is for closers. In less than two weeks, the trade deadline will have passed. I think it’s going to...

Prospect Watch: Looking at Adrian Sampson’s Path to the Majors

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Huston Street Traded to the Angels; Shows Overpriced Market For Closers

Huston Street was traded to the Los Angeles Angels tonight, as first reported by Jim Bowden. The deal is a six player move, and some parts are still unknown. Lindsey came into the year as the top prospect in the Angels’ system, and was rated a top 100...

Adrian Sampson Just Misses a Complete Game No Hitter

Adrian Sampson has easily been the breakout pitcher of the year in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ system. Tonight he continued his amazing run in Altoona, just missing a complete game no-hitter against Bowie. Sampson carried the no hitter into the ninth inning, but gave it up on an 0-2 pitch to Mike Yastrzemski, who doubled down the left field line. Prior to that, Sampson had only given up a walk and an error. The error came in the...

Minor Moves: Pirates Release Two Minor League Pitchers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released two minor league pitchers today, cutting ties with right-handers Jason Townsend and Jorge Mendoza. Townsend is the bigger name here, reaching Altoona and looking like a legit relief prospect for awhile. He was drafted in the 31st round in 2010, and was hitting 97 out of the bullpen with poor control right after the draft. He improved on that control in following years, but didn’t post the...
