Only One More Vote Needed For a New MLB Commissioner

The Major League Baseball owners are meeting today to vote on a new commissioner. The two remaining candidates are Rob Manfred and Tom Werner. I wrote about the two candidates the other day, and what each could mean for the future of baseball. A candidate needs 23 votes to be the commissioner. Anything shy of 23 votes leads to another vote. According to Jon Heyman, the vote has Manfred with 22, one shy of what is needed. Vote produced...

Can JaCoby Jones Become a Starting Shortstop in the Majors?

JaCoby Jones is having an impressive season at the plate in West Virginia. Last night he hit two homers, giving him 20 on the year. I pointed out how he is the first shortstop prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ system to do this since 1996, when Chad Hermansen was playing the position and hit 24 homers. TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Jameson Taillon #1, Clay Holmes #12), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot....

Ernesto Frieri Outrighted to Triple-A By the Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have outrighted right-handed reliever Ernesto Frieri to Triple-A, according to the MLB.com transactions page. This means that Frieri cleared waivers unclaimed. Frieri came to the Pirates in a deal that sent Jason Grilli to the Los Angeles Angels in a swap of struggling relievers. Frieri never bounced back, and actually did worse in his time with the Pirates. He posted a 10.13 ERA in 10.2 innings, with an 8.4 K/9...
