Spring Training Notes: February 19

The Pirates, still early in spring training, ran some light drills on Tuesday morning.  The regimen consisted mainly of drilling the pitchers on backing up bases, fielding grounders, and numerous pitchers throwing briefly to hitters.  Among the pitchers getting some mound work were A.J. GCL Pirates Take Two From Phillies

The GCL Pirates finished up a 6-0 win over the Phillies in a game suspended yesterday after two innings, then also took the regularly scheduled game in seven innings by a 4-2 count.  The Pirates got strong outings from Cesar Lopez, picking up for Jon Sandfort in the continuation, and from Dovydas Neverauskas.  An inside-the-park homerun by Elvis Escobar highlighted the first game and a bases-loaded triple by Jin-De Jhang the second....

Wyatt Mathisen Hits First Homer in GCL Pirates Win

The GCL Pirates scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat the GCL Braves, 3-2.  Edwin Espinal singled to drive in Harold Ramirez — who had reached on a two-out infield hit and stolen second — with the winning run.  Espinal’s hit backed strong pitching from starter Axel Diaz and reliever Isaac Sanchez, who got the win.
