Fifth Round: Pirates Draft Right Fielder Michael Suchy

The Pittsburgh Pirates have drafted right fielder Michael Suchy in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft. Suchy is from Florida Gulf Coast University, and went to high school in Bradenton, FL. This is the third right fielder the Pirates have drafted in the top five rounds. Suchy seems like more of a project than Connor Joe and Jordan Luplow. He’s a toolsy outfielder who played football in high school, and has a big 6′...

Fourth Round: Pirates Draft Catcher Taylor Gushue

The Pittsburgh Pirates have drafted catcher Taylor Gushue from the University of Florida in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB draft. Draft Day One Recap: What Needs to Happen to Justify These Pirates Picks?

My initial reaction when the Pittsburgh Pirates made their first two picks in today’s draft was that the Pirates reached on both picks, and didn’t get the best value at their positions. The Pirates will say that they stuck to their draft board, and they will say that they trust their board over national pundits like Baseball America, MLB.com, and Keith Law. My reaction is still that they reached and didn’t get good...
