Martin, Marte, and McCutchen are Gold Glove Finalists

Rawlings announced the finalists for the 2013 NL Gold Glove awards today, and the Pirates had three players in contention. Russell Martin, Starling Marte, and Andrew McCutchen were all finalists at their positions. Russell Martin was one of three finalists at catcher. The other two finalists this year are A.J. Ellis of the Dodgers, and Yadier Molina of the Cardinals. Martin won a Gold Glove in 2007 with the Los Angeles Dodgers....

First Pitch: What Would the Pirates Do?

Last night I wrote about how the Tampa Bay Rays were the model franchise in baseball. In the comments, a few people talked about how the Pirates should strive to be the model franchise. This is definitely true. I mention the Rays so often because they’ve been the most successful small market team. They’ve done this by using small market strategies, such as valuing young players and prospects, trading players at the right...

The Pirates Should Become the Relief Pitching Factory

One of the impressive things about the Pittsburgh Pirates has been their ability to trade quality relievers for other pieces of their team, and yet still manage to put together a strong bullpen. I pointed out how strong their bullpen was today in the 2013 bullpen recap, and that was after trading Joel Hanrahan, Brad Lincoln, and Chris Resop in the last year. Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 Season Recap: The Bullpen

If there was any doubt that Neal Huntington can build a bullpen, then the 2013 season should have erased that doubt. Last off-season, Huntington traded Joel Hanrahan in his final year of team control. In return, the Pirates got Mark Melancon, Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel, and Ivan De Jesus. Hanrahan made $7 M and went down early with a season ending injury. He will be a free agent this off-season. Melancon put up a 1.39 ERA in 71...

Winter Leagues: Gregory Polanco Does It Again

While some other Pittsburgh Pirates players are doing well early on in the Winter League season, none of them can match Gregory Polanco. Not only is he the top prospect in the system playing Winter Ball now, he has also tore up the Dominican League through five games and Wednesday night was his best game so far. Polanco is now batting .500 with three homers and eight RBI’s thanks to a 4-for-4 night in his team’s 8-0 win....

First Pitch: The Rays are the Model Team and Haven’t Won a World Series

What Would the Rays Do? If you’ve read this site long enough, you will have seen that phrase from me. And by “long enough”, I mean “for at least a week”. The Rays are the model organization for any small market team. They’ve found a way to win with a much smaller payroll, in the biggest spending division in baseball, while also removing the word “window” from their vocabulary....
