First Pitch: Are MLB Teams Getting Smarter With Certain Financial Decisions?

Buster Olney wrote an interesting article earlier today, talking about Stephen Drew, Kendrys Morales, and mentioning Vin Mazzaro clearing waivers. Mazzaro could have been had for just the cost of his $950,000 salary on waivers, but ended up clearing waivers and getting outrighted to Triple-A. Olney had the following quote from one GM to explain the situation. “Once you go to spring training, you’ve spent almost all the money...

Jeff Locke Dominates With His Fastball in a Rehab Start

Jeff Locke made a rehab start tonight for the Bradenton Marauders, coming in to the start with the goal of six innings or 100 pitches, depending on what came first. He ended up reaching the six innings easily without worrying about the 100 pitches, all due to strong fastball command and an approach to pound the strike zone. Locke gave up two runs on five hits and a walk in six innings, with ten strikeouts. A lot of the strikeouts were...

Prospect Watch: Sadler With Another Strong Start; McGuire Picks Up Three Hits

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors (Tony Sanchez #11, Stolmy Pimentel #13). An Early Look at the 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates Rotation

It’s way too early to be talking about the 2015 starting rotation. The 2014 season is just over a week old, and we still have a lot of questions to be answered about the rotation this year. However, the recent injury to Jameson Taillon has led to a lot of questions about how the 2015 rotation will look. Taillon was originally supposed to be in the majors by mid-season this year, and would have been part of that 2015 group. Now...

What Do You Want to See on Pirates Prospects?

This week I’ve been working on adding new writers to the site. I’m still in the process of adding writers, but once again, we will have coverage of every level of the minor league system this year. We’ll also have coverage of the Pirates at the major league level once again. However, we’re taking a different approach in each area, focusing less on game recaps, and more on analysis and scouting reports....

First Pitch: Where Can the Pirates Exceed Their Projections?

Earlier today I took a look at the playoff odds for the first time this season. The Pirates were projected just outside of the second Wild Card spot, mostly due to the fact that their poor pre-season projections are still making up a bulk of the projections, despite their early season success. The Pirates are off to a 5-2 start, which really doesn’t mean much this early in the season. The pre-season projections should be making...
