Morning Report: Cole Tucker Holds His Own in His First Pro Season

Pittsburgh Pirates first round draft pick Cole Tucker finished off his first season in the Gulf Coast League on Thursday afternoon. Usually some GCL players move up at the end of the year because the GCL season ends earlier than the other leagues. Bristol has just one game left this year, so that would seem like an unlikely destination and Jamestown’s season ends on Monday, so their season is almost over too. Call-ups from...

First Pitch: The Pirates Still Lost the Marlon Byrd Deal, and That’s Still OK

A year and a day ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the New York Mets, sending Dilson Herrera and Vic Black in return. Today, the Mets called up Herrera to the majors, which means the second baseman has made the jump from Low-A to the majors in one year. Many of those players moved up to the United States this year to help fill out roster space due to the new Bristol affiliate. After eight DSL players were released back in May, that left the Pirates team filled with first year players and a...

Morning Report: Trying to Get Value Out of Non-Drafted Free Agents

Since the beginning of this year, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed seven non-drafted free agents. Three of those came before the 2014 draft, but only one of those players is left in the system. Catchers Mitch Slauter and Mike Spano were signed prior to Spring Training and released in early June. That leaves infielder Nathan Sopena, along with the four players signed since this last draft. Those players are catcher Chris Harvey,...
