In fact, there’s a 90% chance that the podcast will return next week, and I’ve already lined up the first guest.

On the surface, what you see me doing with this job involves the writing, podcasts, and anything that shows up on the site. Behind the scenes, I’ve had a lot going on this year involving a few projects that we hope to roll out this season, along with a few side projects that you’ll find out about soon enough. I’ve also been adding writers throughout the season, as you’ve already seen with the great work that Ryan Palencer is doing in Indianapolis, and which you will see with a few new writers over the next few weeks. Most of the writers we added are just finishing up with school, and will be making their “debuts” shortly.

In the process of adding writers, working on behind the scenes stuff, and my general role of managing the site, I haven’t had time to do any podcasts until now.

But if you’re looking for a podcast now, you should check out The River Avenue Blues podcast, which I was a guest on this week, discussing the upcoming series between the Yankees and the Pirates. Joe Pawlikowski and I discussed the Pirates this year, including looking at some of the former Yankees who are now Pirates, along with a quick preview of the pitching matchups this weekend. A few of the highlights:

**We talked about the reputation Jose Tabata has with Pirates fans of being lazy, which was the same reputation he had with the Yankees.

**We discussed why pitchers like Francisco Liriano, Mark Melancon, and Edinson Volquez have gone from some of the worst numbers in the league, to respectable numbers.

**I found out that Gerrit Cole is the Yankees version of Miguel Sano. Every time a prospect list comes out, or every other week (whichever comes first) I hear something about Sano. I always wondered if other teams fan bases do the same thing with “the one that got away”. Apparently they do, even when it’s the Yankees.

To listen to the podcast, head over to River Avenue Blues. Hopefully by this time next week, I’ll be announcing the first episode of the new season of our podcast.

P3 Episode 19: Catching Up With Rocco DeMaro http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/09/p3-episode-19-catching-up-with-rocco-demaro.html http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/09/p3-episode-19-catching-up-with-rocco-demaro.html#comments Wed, 11 Sep 2013 15:00:22 +0000 http://www.piratesprospects.com/?p=66067 Pirates Prospects PodcastEpisode 19 of The Pirates Prospects Podcast can be downloaded or streamed below. It has been a few weeks since our last podcast. We recorded a show a few weeks ago, but the Pirates traded for Marlon Byrd the next day which made the podcast outdated before we had the chance to post it. Then we waited through illness, waited until the Pirates made all of their moves, then finally waited until the Pirates won number 82. That leads us to this special episode, following up the Pirates first winning season.

It wouldn’t be fitting if we just did a normal episode. So instead James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and I invited special guest Rocco DeMaro (@RoccoDeMaro) on to the show this week. You may remember Rocco as the host of Pirates Extra Innings, and the leader of the resistance. Highlights of the show include:

**Rocco is working for GameTrailers.com now, where he hosts the Side Mission Briefing podcast. This week he had Neal Huntington on the show, talking about the winning season. They also talked about sports video games, and how they compare to the real deal with building a franchise. It was a very entertaining interview, regardless of whether you’re a Pirates fan, a sports video game fan, or both.

**We started off discussing some of the moves that were made when Rocco was the host of the post game show. That was during the early Huntington years, including 2008-2010, which were some rough years where the Pirates were in total rebuild and made a few mistakes during the process.

**One of the moves we discussed was the Nate McLouth trade, which Rocco was high on at the time of the deal, and which has worked out extremely well today. That’s an example of a deal where the Pirates sold high, bought low, and went for guys who could make a difference. It’s the same strategy the Pirates are using today in making deals like Joel Hanrahan for Mark Melancon.

**Rocco was unapologetic about praising Neal Huntington’s work, since he has taken a horrible team and turned it into a contender with a top farm system.

**We talked about whether Matt Morris was the low point for the Pirates during the losing streak.

**Of course we got into a long discussion about the history of the Pirates developing prospects.

**After rehashing a lot of the old moves and how they’ve worked out, we get Rocco’s thoughts on the Pirates this year and the rest of the season.

**We also talked about video games, specifically sports games. Rocco feels that Baseball Stars 1989 is the best baseball game there is. He also recommended Out Of The Park baseball to me. After checking it out, I’m pretty sure I know what the downfall of this site will be.

P3 Episode 18: Prospect Talk With Pirates Farm Director Larry Broadway http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/08/p3-episode-18-prospect-talk-with-pirates-farm-director-larry-broadway.html http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/08/p3-episode-18-prospect-talk-with-pirates-farm-director-larry-broadway.html#comments Fri, 23 Aug 2013 13:00:53 +0000 http://www.piratesprospects.com/?p=64346 Pirates Prospects PodcastEpisode 18 of The Pirates Prospects Podcast can be downloaded or streamed below. We moved the major league show back this week, due to James Santelli being on the West Coast covering the Pirates. Instead, I was joined by Pirates Director of Minor League Operations Larry Broadway, who discussed several of the top prospects in the system. Highlights of the show include:

**We were recording at McKechnie Field in Bradenton during a rain delay on Thursday, so the first topic was Bradenton first baseman Stetson Allie and his breakout season.

Running through some of the top ten prospects:

**Can Jameson Taillon be ready by mid-season 2014?

**It takes a long time for tall, skinny athletes like Gregory Polanco and Tyler Glasnow to get a feel for their body, but when they do they really start taking off.

**Can Gregory Polanco make it to Indianapolis by the end of the year? I got no answer, but we discussed what a player needs to do to move up.

**We talked about Alen Hanson’s defense, and how he shows the ability to stick at shortstop but can mess up on routine plays. Broadway says the Pirates feel he can be an everyday shortstop.

**Polanco and Hanson were breakout prospects last year in West Virginia. Tyler Glasnow is this year’s breakout prospect. I ask if his upside could be the same as Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon. This all came before Glasnow’s 13 strikeouts in five innings last night.

**Josh Bell is showing some power this year, although there have been reports that his swing from the right side needs work. We discuss his season and the swing.

**Broadway gives his thoughts on how Austin Meadows and Reese McGuire have started off.

**Next year the Pirates might have a crunch at catcher in low-A, with McGuire, Wyatt Mathisen, and Jin-De Jhang all projected at the position. It’s still early, but how will they manage all three players?

**Can Austin Meadows be an impact power guy in the majors?

**Broadway scouted and signed Nick Kingham in the 2010 draft. We talk about his progression so far as a pro, going from an over-slot prep pitcher to a guy who is hitting 97-98 MPH at times this year.

**The Pirates have taken a lot of over-slot prep pitchers. They’ve seen several break out, led by Glasnow and Kingham. We talk about what leads to an increase in velocity and the topic of projectability.

**Luis Heredia started late this season due to some conditioning issues, but has made some lifestyle changes since then. His biggest issue this year has been the walks, mostly due to his inability to control his body at a young age.

P3 Episode 17: The Pirates Issues With RISP, Platoons, and Small Ball http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/08/p3-episode-17-the-pirates-issues-with-risp-platoons-and-small-ball.html http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/08/p3-episode-17-the-pirates-issues-with-risp-platoons-and-small-ball.html#comments Fri, 16 Aug 2013 13:00:29 +0000 http://www.piratesprospects.com/?p=63656 Pirates Prospects PodcastEpisode 17 of The Pirates Prospects Podcast can be downloaded or streamed below. This episode includes analysis from Nate Barnes (@NateBarnes_TPN), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include:

**The Pirates went 1-5 in the last week on their six game road trip, but still remain in first place by two games over the St. Louis Cardinals. We review the recent games and how the Pirates looked in those losses. The Pirates won a lot of close games last week, and lost a lot of close games this week. That’s natural, as most teams aren’t going to win every close game.

**A big focus this week due to all of the close losses has been runners in scoring position. I wrote about that Thursday night in First Pitch, getting the input of some of my followers on Twitter on what could be a solution. In the show I ask James and Nate for their input on the problem.

**We talk all year about guys who are going to regress from good numbers to numbers that aren’t as good. In this case, the Pirates have a lot of hitters who you could expect to regress in a positive manner. We also talk about how the word “regression” carries a negative connotation, when in fact it is a neutral word.

**Nate feels that we shouldn’t be looking at the RISP numbers, but numbers such as Leverage Index that focus only on big situations.

**The Pirates have so many hitters in the lineup who can’t hit lefties, which is a big problem because they don’t have as many guys on the bench who can hit lefties. We’ve talked about this problem a lot this year, and that’s a big issue why the offense is struggling for extended periods this year. It’s also not a bad thing to call a player a platoon player.

**Gaby Sanchez draws a lot of criticism, and we discuss why he is so under-rated, and why the Pirates would do well to find a Gaby Sanchez for a few other positions around the field.

**The Pirates have a boom or bust offense that isn’t built for small ball. So why do they keep playing small ball like the seventh inning on Thursday against the Cardinals? I rant for several minutes on why this is a failed strategy.

**The Pirates do have some problems, but ultimately they’ve had those problems all year and they’ve been competitive all year. Their strengths have been much bigger than their weaknesses, and that’s why they’ll remain competitive the rest of the year.

This episode includes analysis from Nate Barnes (@NateBarnes_TPN), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include:

**Last week James and Nate predicted the Pirates would go 5-1 against the Rockies and Marlins. The Pirates did go 5-1 in those games. We reviewed those games, and where the Pirates are in the standings.

**The Cardinals have suffered a lot of injuries, including Yadier Molina. They have also struggled a lot in the last few weeks. We talk about whether that’s going to hurt the Cardinals in the long-term, and give the Pirates an advantage.

**The Pirates have their first two starters in a playoff series in Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett. The list of pitchers after that raises a lot of question marks. James wrote about the playoff roster earlier this week, and we talked about who could be the number three starter in the playoff rotation.

**Jeff Locke has started to regress, and Nate wrote about his regression this week. We talked about how Locke will still be good enough to be an option for the playoff rotation.

**Gerrit Cole probably won’t be one of the four starters in the playoff rotation, but he could be a great reliever for the Pirates down the stretch.

**We talked about the Alex Rios trade, with Nate mentioning that he hates Rios. We talk about the waiver trading process.

**We preview the upcoming games on the road against the Rockies and the Cardinals. Nate and James predict 3-3, while I go 4-2. We recorded this before the Pirates lost game one to the Rockies.

This episode includes analysis from Nate Barnes (@NateBarnes_TPN), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include:

**The trade deadline was extremely slow. We talked about what led to that slow deadline, and some of the reported prices on the market.

**The Pirates just took 4 of 5 against the Cardinals. We recorded this before game five, so we gave our reactions to the first four games and how the Pirates have been performing against the Cardinals this year.

**The crowd at PNC Park has been really lively this year, and has been responding well to the actual game. We talked about the best baseball atmospheres we have experienced.

**Everyone worries about a Pirates collapse, but they might not be the team at risk of a collapse. The Cardinals might not necessarily collapse, but the recent injury to Yadier Molina and their recent struggles make them the most likely in the NL Central race to fade.

**We talked about how the Pirates have a good shot at making the playoffs, and how the Dodgers might be their biggest problem in the post-season. It’s also good to be able to have that conversation, as opposed to the conversation of whether the Pirates will even make the post-season.

This episode includes analysis from Nate Barnes (@NateBarnes_TPN), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include:

**We introduce new beat writer Nate Barnes to the show this week.

**There were some audio problems in the first nine minutes. We got everything figured out after that.

**We talk about how the trade market has been weak so far, with not a lot of names being talked about on the block. With the lack of impact options, and the lack of chances for other teams to get a big upgrade, do the Pirates need to make a move?

**The bench needs some help. Adding someone to the lineup and moving Garrett Jones to the bench would give the Pirates a good power bat off the bench. They could also use some hitters off the bench who can hit left-handers.

**The discussion on the offense hasn’t changed in the last month. The Pirates still need an upgrade, but they’ve been contending with their pitching. James brings up Brian Wilson, who was connected to the Pirates this week. That sparks a conversation on Wilson that slowly has James talking himself into the idea of adding Wilson at the deadline.

**Can the seller’s market turn to more of an even market in the next five days?

**We give our predictions for what the Pirates will do next week at the deadline.

This episode includes analysis from Tom Bragg (@TomBraggSports), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include:

**With Jose Tabata returning with a hot bat, we ask whether the Pirates need to trade for a right fielder. One factor that could impact the decision is that right field has been the most productive offensive position across the league, and the Pirates haven’t been getting consistent offense this year.

**The bench has also been an issue. We talk about building from the top down by upgrading the lineup and moving a good player to the bench. The Pirates also don’t have a big threat off the bench. Could that be Garrett Jones if the team upgrades at first base?

**I talked about platoons this week, looking at the spots that need them and the value of those platoons. We discuss the strategy of platoons for the Pirates bench.

**The bench talk got into the topic of Brandon Inge and how he’s the weakest link on the team.

**Most of the upgrade talk has been focused on hitting, but the Pirates have been winning because of their pitching. Should the Pirates be focused on adding a starting pitcher? They might not need a top starter for the rest of the season, but a top starter could help them in the playoffs. The Pirates have an 86% chance of making the post-season based on the recent projections.

**The Pirates have had a great bullpen this year. James argues the Pirates should add a strong reliever to add to the Jason Grilli/Mark Melancon/Justin Wilson group. I don’t like the idea of paying for relievers. The Pirates have had success going with low-cost upgrades, which is an approach I think they should continue. So we debate, and that leads to the idea that Gerrit Cole could be a dominant reliever in the playoffs.

**James Santelli covered the Altoona Curve last week, and wrote about Jameson Taillon in this article. James talks about what he saw from Taillon, including Taillon’s focus on first pitch strikes and the development of his changeup.

**James liked what he saw from Alex Dickerson and Gregory Polanco. He didn’t like what he saw from Quinton Miller, who was the first of the over-slot prep pitchers the Pirates signed.

**Tom Bragg and John Dreker both covered West Virginia in the last week. John wrote a great recap of West Virginia on Monday, highlighting Luis Heredia and Barrett Barnes.

**Tom, John and I discuss Heredia’s first two starts, along with Tyler Glasnow’s recent outings, and a few other players on the roster like Walker Gourley and Raul Fortunato.

**While discussing Gourley and Fortunato we get into the discussion on the value of organizational players and how they help your prospects.

**This week I interviewed Reese McGuire, who was the second pick by the Pirates in the 2013 draft and the 14th overall pick in the draft this year.

**The show has new intro music! It’s ‘Let’s Get it Started’ by Oh No Not Stereo. Courtesy of BeatPick.com

**We talk about the expected decision to send Tony Sanchez down. When should Sanchez return to the majors? We explain the long-term benefit to keeping Michael McKenry up the rest of the year.

**How much did the multiple jaw injuries impact Tony Sanchez? Are his numbers this year a reflection of his true hitting abilities? Were the numbers the last two years a result of the loss in weight from his two broken jaws?

**In the second half of the show we each give our second half sleepers: guys who are currently on the roster who could provide a boost to the team in the second half.

**If you missed it earlier this week, be sure to check out the first episode of Pirates Roundtable. We talk about how the first show went.

**The trade market will heat up in July, and we discuss the needs a bit more. Right field is the glaring need, but the Pirates could get creative and upgrade first base, while shifting Garrett Jones to right field. That would allow Gaby Sanchez to move to third base and platoon with Pedro Alvarez, which would provide an upgrade at third. You’d still need a platoon option in right field, but this would give the Pirates more options if they wanted an everyday player.

**Off-topic discussions: What Dodgers do we hate? Which Pirates writers look like Arrested Development characters? We all want to see “World War Z” and “This is the End”.
