Pirates Sign 41st Round Pick Jonathan Schwind

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed 41st round pick Jonathan Schwind, according to the Democrat and Chronicle (h/t Kristy Robinson).  Schwind was signed for $20,000, plus the Pirates agreed to pay for his senior year of school ($41,000).  The former Marist junior played three infield positions, and two outfield positions, but was drafted as a catcher by the Pirates.  He will report to the GCL Pirates, who start their season on Monday....

Wyatt Toregas Clears Waivers

Wyatt Toregas, who was waived earlier this week to create space for Michael McKenry, has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to AAA Indianapolis.  Toregas only played in three games for the Pirates, and only started one of those games.  He went 0-for-4 in his only at-bats, after going 1-for-29 in Indianapolis. Pirates Sign Undrafted Free Agent Pitcher

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed undrafted free agent Robbie Kilcrease, a left handed pitcher from Texas Tech, according to Rob Biertempfel.  The signing was announced yesterday on the Texas Tech official site.  Kilcrease was a redshirt junior, and will report to Bradenton, where he likely will play with the high-A team. Jose Ascanio Clears Waivers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have outrighted pitcher Jose Ascanio to Indianapolis after the right hander cleared waivers, David Todd first reported.  Ascanio was designated for assignment last week when the Pirates recalled Tony Watson from AAA, adding a second left hander to the bullpen.  Prior to the move, Ascanio had a 7.11 ERA in 6.1 innings, with a 5:2 K/BB ratio. The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with 10th round pick Taylor Lewis, Pirates Prospects has learned.  Lewis, a center fielder out of the University of Maine, put up a .287/.367/.412 line in 216 at-bats this year, with 20 stolen bases.  He was rated the fifth best prospect in upper New England by Baseball America.
