The Pittsburgh Pirates have drafted shortstop Gustavo Nunez from the Detroit Tigers in the 2011 Rule 5 draft. Nunez, 23, has played as high as the AA level. Derrek Lee Declines Arbitration

Free agent first baseman Derrek Lee has declined his arbitration offer from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lee can still sign with the Pirates, and the team is expected to continue pursuing him, although this is more evidence that Lee just didn’t want to play in Pittsburgh. If Lee signs with another team, the Pirates will get a compensation pick in the 2012 draft.

Pirates Release Ross Ohlendorf

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released right handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, who was expected to be a non-tender candidate next week. Ohlendorf was coming off a horrible season, and has dealt with injury problems the last few years. He would have made a raise through arbitration over his 2011 salary had the Pirates kept him around. The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired infielder Yamaico Navarro from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right handed pitcher Brooks Pounders and infielder Diego Goris. Earlier today we heard that the Pirates reached an agreement with Nate McLouth. The move was just made official, per a team press release. To clear space for McLouth on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have designated infielder Pedro Ciriaco for assignment. The Pirates have ten days to waive, trade, or release Ciriaco. If he clears waivers, they can outright him to AAA. McLouth will make $1.75 M on a one year deal.
