Pirates Officially Sign Scott Olsen

The Pittsburgh Pirates have officially signed left hander Scott Olsen, according to the team’s Twitter feed.  We learned yesterday that Olsen received a one year deal for $500,000, with up to $3 M in performance bonuses.  We also learned that the deal includes a club option for $4 M for the 2012 season.  No word on whether there is a buyout on that option, although it could be for $500,000, since the deal was originally reported...

The Rule 5 draft was completed this morning, with the Pittsburgh Pirates selecting Josh Rodriguez from the Cleveland Indians.  I reviewed Rodriguez earlier today right after the pick was made.  With J.J. Pirates Acquire Cesar Valdez to Complete Duke Trade

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right handed pitcher Cesar Valdez from the Arizona Diamondbacks as the player to be named later in the Zach Duke trade.  Valdez has spent the last two seasons as a starter in AAA for Arizona, combining for a 5.34 ERA in 193.2 innings, along with a 7.1 K/9 and a 3.7 BB/9 ratio. Pirates Select Josh Rodriguez in the Rule 5 Draft

The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected shortstop Josh Rodriguez with the first pick in the 2010 Rule 5 draft.  We heard from Jennifer Langosch before the draft that the Pirates were likely to take Rodriguez with the first pick. Rodriguez, who turns 26 in about a week, hit for a .293/.372/.486 line in 317 at-bats in AAA this past year in the Cleveland farm system.  He played most of his games at shortstop, and also played second base....
