Spring Training Notes: Wandy Rodriguez, Jason Grilli, Jeanmar Gomez

The Pittsburgh Pirates got some great results from their Major League pitchers yesterday, with Wandy Rodriguez, Jason Grilli, and Jeanmar Gomez combining for six shutout innings. Afterwards, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he was pleased with the three pitchers, and ran through what impressed him with each guy. Wandy Rodriguez - Hurdle pointed out that he had an aggressive approach, and also was mixing in some curveballs in the...

First Look at Jen-Lei Liao, a 6′ 6″, 264 Pound Pitcher From Taiwan (Video)

The Pirates signed Jen-Lei Liao out of Taiwan this off-season. I saw Liao throwing a bullpen during minor league camp on Wednesday. He’s a 20-year old pitcher who has a huge frame, at 6′ 6″, 264 pounds. Pirates Trying to Work Some Familiar Magic on Daniel Schlereth

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in a good situation with their left-handed relievers in the majors. Tony Watson looked like one of the best relievers in baseball during the second half of the 2013 season. Clay Holmes Following the Nick Kingham Path

The Pittsburgh Pirates have plenty of top pitching prospects in their system. Gerrit Cole made the jump to the majors in 2013, and was looking like an ace by the end of the season. Jameson Taillon is expected to make that same jump in 2014. Tyler Glasnow broke onto the scene as a potential top of the rotation guy in 2013, and could be up as early as mid-2015, depending on how well he does with his command in the upper levels. Beyond...

Stetson Allie Getting an Aggressive Push to Altoona in 2014

There is no question that Stetson Allie has the best raw power in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. As far as the entire organization, the only player who would be better is Pedro Alvarez. The ball explodes off Allie’s bat with little effort, making you believe that if he reaches the majors, 30 home runs could easily be accomplished. The one problem with that is Allie’s path to the majors is questionable. He dealt with...
