Another Trade Coming?

Rob Biertempfel provided an update on Twitter saying that the Pittsburgh Pirates were having a closed door meeting, and that there’s a sense another trade might be coming.  We’ve already heard that the Pirates are still in the mix for outfielder Ryan Ludwick.  At this point, the best addition for the Pirates would be an outfielder, although outfield options are growing slim.  The Twins don’t seem to want to trade...

Pirates Should Be Shopping Paul Maholm

Yesterday, before a lot of the trades started coming through, I took a look at how the market was shaping up, noting that it was looking like a seller’s market.  That opinion didn’t change yesterday, especially with starting pitchers. Ubaldo Jimenez was traded from the Colorado Rockies to the Cleveland Indians.  Jimenez had a big year last year, but has struggled a bit this year, including a drop in velocity which is...

Is Derrek Lee an Upgrade?

Last night I saw an update flash by on Twitter that Derrek Lee had hit his 12th homer of the year.  My first thought was “that can’t be right, last time I looked he had four homers on the year”.  Then I took another look at Lee, my first since mid-June. On June 17th, Lee went 5-for-5 at the plate.  From June 17th to now, Lee has a .294/.331/.538 line with eight homers in 143 at-bats.  If Lee is starting to heat up...

Saturday Rumors: Kubel, Pena, Lee, Willingham, Furbush

Kind of a slow pre-deadline day for the Pirates, although I don’t think it’s just them.  The relief market hasn’t really opened up, and there’s a lot of hold up on Ubaldo Jimenez.  Here’s a few updates on some players the Pirates are looking at: -Jon Paul Morosi mentions that he spoke to a source who downplayed the idea that Jason Kubel or Michael Cuddyer would be moved by the Minnesota Twins.  Seems kind...

Trade Values: Shaping Up to Be a Seller’s Market

Throughout the 2011 trade season, I’ve been reviewing the trade values of players.  As I mentioned earlier in the month, the trade values are meant to represent the baseline value, and it’s possible for other teams to affect the price, especially if more than one team is willing to offer the same value for a player.  In the last few days we’ve seen two major trades, and one minor trade which involved established...
