Pirates Agree to Terms With Josh Fields

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with infielder Josh Fields on a minor league contract, with an invite to Spring Training.  Fields, who turned 28 last week, is a former top third base prospect, ranking in Baseball America’s top 50 as recently as the 2007 season.  So far he has yet to put things together at the Major League level, with a career .234/.303/.421 line in 713 at-bats. Fields missed most of the 2010 season...

Kevin Correia Signing Announced

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced the signing of Kevin Correia today, a week after they agreed to terms with the free agent right hander.  The delay between the agreement and the signing was expected, due to Correia’s wife having a baby last week.  Before Correia is added to the 40-man roster, a spot needs to be opened up, since the 40-man roster is currently full. Jennifer Langosch mentions that a spot could be cleared either...

Pirates Re-Sign Donald Veal

The Pittsburgh Pirates have re-signed Donald Veal to a minor league contract, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.  Veal was non-tendered two weeks ago, but the Pirates were said to be trying to bring him back. Veal went down early in the 2010 season with Tommy John surgery, and probably won’t return until June 2011.  Had the Pirates tendered him a contract, he would have had to start the season on the disabled list,...

Matt Diaz Signing Official and Contract Details

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Matt Diaz signing official, inking the outfielder to a two-year deal.  We learned Diaz’s role in 2011 after the Lyle Overbay signing earlier today, as he will be platooning in right field with Garrett Jones.  That’s a good combination, as Diaz is a career .335/.373/.533 hitter against left handers, while Jones is a career .282/.359/.495 hitter against right handers. Diaz will receive...

Pirates Sign Lyle Overbay

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Lyle Overbay to a one year deal, according to the team twitter account.  I detailed the Overbay rumors in a post from earlier today. Overbay isn’t the most inspiring free agent addition.  He’s coming off a .243/.329/.433 line in 534 at-bats in 2010, with 20 homers during that span.  The left hander has been better in his career against right handed hitters, with an .838 OPS, compared to a...

Ronny Cedeno and Jeff Karstens Contract Details

Jennifer Langosch has the contract details for Ronny Cedeno and Jeff Karstens, who each agreed to one year deals prior to the December 2nd non-tender deadline, thus avoiding arbitration. Karstens will make $1.1 M, which is a figure we already knew.  However, Langosch adds that he can make $25,000 if he makes 20 starts, and another $25,000 if he makes 25 starts.  Karstens stepped up in the rotation last year to make 19 starts. Cedeno...
