Matt Diaz Signing Official and Contract Details

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Matt Diaz signing official, inking the outfielder to a two-year deal.  We learned Diaz’s role in 2011 after the Lyle Overbay signing earlier today, as he will be platooning in right field with Garrett Jones.  That’s a good combination, as Diaz is a career .335/.373/.533 hitter against left handers, while Jones is a career .282/.359/.495 hitter against right handers. Diaz will receive...

Pirates Sign Lyle Overbay

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Lyle Overbay to a one year deal, according to the team twitter account.  I detailed the Overbay rumors in a post from earlier today. Overbay isn’t the most inspiring free agent addition.  He’s coming off a .243/.329/.433 line in 534 at-bats in 2010, with 20 homers during that span.  The left hander has been better in his career against right handed hitters, with an .838 OPS, compared to a...

Ronny Cedeno and Jeff Karstens Contract Details

Jennifer Langosch has the contract details for Ronny Cedeno and Jeff Karstens, who each agreed to one year deals prior to the December 2nd non-tender deadline, thus avoiding arbitration. Cedeno...

2010 Pittsburgh Pirates Rule 5 Draft Recap

The Rule 5 draft was completed this morning, with the Pittsburgh Pirates selecting Josh Rodriguez from the Cleveland Indians.  I reviewed Rodriguez earlier today right after the pick was made.  With J.J. Hardy and Jason Bartlett off the board, it’s looking more and more like Ronny Cedeno will be the starting shortstop for the Pirates in 2011. Rodriguez had success at the AAA level in 2010, and could step in to the majors in 2011...
