The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled left handed pitcher Tony Watson, which is their corresponding move to placing Paul Maholm on the 15-day disabled list yesterday.  Watson was optioned to AAA on August 6th, but prior to that had a 2.73 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 26.1 innings in the majors.

Paul Maholm to the DL

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed left handed pitcher Paul Maholm on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder strain.  The team will announce a corresponding roster move tomorrow. According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN, the Pittsburgh Pirates have extended outfielder Jose Tabata for six years and at least $14.75 M guaranteed.  The team also has option years for the 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons, which would make the contract a total of nine years and $37.25 M.  Tabata would have normally been a free agent in 2017, so this deal buys three years of control. Jose Tabata Activated, Pedro Alvarez Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates have re-instated outfielder Jose Tabata from the 15-day disabled list, and have optioned third baseman Pedro Alvarez to AAA.  Prior to his injury, Tabata was batting for a .265 average with a .705 OPS in 257 at-bats in the majors this year.  In his rehab work with Indianapolis, he hit for a .333 average in 33 at-bats, while also getting time in at right field. Pirates Sign Gerrit Cole and Josh Bell

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed first overall pick Gerrit Cole, and second round pick Josh Bell, according to Jon Heyman (Cole, Bell). Cole will get $8 M, and it’s a minor league deal, per Dejan Kovacevic.  The bonus is the highest in draft history, topping the $7.5 M bonus that Stephen Strasburg received.  It’s also a record for the Pirates.
