Pirates Recall Jaramillo, Call Up Brian Burres

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled catcher Jason Jaramillo, and have purchased the contract of left handed pitcher Brian Burres, according to a team press release.  Burres is expected to start for the Pirates on Friday against the Chicago Cubs.  There was an open spot on the 40-man roster, and Burres will fill that spot.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded John Bowker to the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.  No word on the return, or if there is a return at all.  The Phillies are expected to add Bowker to the 25-man roster.  Since he was not on the 40-man roster, he didn’t have to go through waivers to be traded. The Pittsburgh Pirates have released outfielder Justin Bencsko.  Bencsko was a 20th round pick last year, taken as a college senior.  The outfielder was a one tool talent, with speed being that tool.  He was one of the fastest players in the system, but struggled at the plate this year in State College and West Virginia.

Wes Freeman Promoted to West Virginia

The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted outfielder Wes Freeman from State College to West Virginia.  Freeman, one of two Spikes to play in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, improved his average from .169 on July 17 to .304 at the conclusion of tonight’s game.
