Pedro Ciriaco Recalled

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to recall shortstop Pedro Ciriaco, according to Jenifer Langosch.  It would be assumed that Ciriaco is getting recalled to replace someone going on the disabled list, and Langosch speculates that the someone in this case would be Pedro Alvarez. If it does end up being Alvarez, it would be likely that Brandon Wood would see extra playing time, filling in for Alvarez at third base.  Steve Pearce has also...

Pirates Activate Bryan Morris, Leroux to AAA

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released Chris Leroux, according to an Altoona press release.  Leroux’s release clears space on the Altoona roster for the return of Bryan Morris, who was previously on the disabled list.  Since Leroux was also on the 40-man roster, that clears a spot.  The 40-man is currently at 38 players. UPDATE 2:51 PM: First press release was a mistake.  Altoona sent a follow up saying Leroux was promoted to...

Pirates Release Scott Olsen

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released left handed pitcher Scott Olsen, according to Colin Dunlap.  The move isn’t really a surprise, as Olsen has been on the 60-day disabled list, and doesn’t really have a spot on the team when he returns. Olsen was signed on December 6th, the same day as Kevin Correia, to a one year, $450,000 deal.  The deal included an option for $4 M in 2012, with a $100,000 buyout.  I wasn’t a fan...

Pirates Release Tom Boleska, Activate Brian Leach

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released right handed reliever Tom Boleska, in order to make room in Altoona for right handed reliever Brian Leach, who is coming off the disabled list.  Boleska currently has a 5.40 ERA in 16.2 innings, with an 11:12 K/BB ratio.  Most of his struggles are recent, as he started the season with 10.2 shutout innings, before allowing 10 runs in six innings over his last four outings.  However, his strikeout...

Jose Ascanio Activated, Michael Crotta to DL

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated right handed reliever Jose Ascanio from the 15-day disabled list, and have placed right handed reliever Michael Crotta on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.  The placement of Crotta frees up the spot for Ascanio, who finished his rehab work this week in AAA. I talked about Ascanio the other day, questioning whether he should have been added to the 25-man roster.  If the...

John Bowker Outrighted to AAA

Last week the Pittsburgh Pirates designated John Bowker for assignment, making room for Xavier Paul, who was claimed from the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Today, Bowker cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA. Bowker was originally acquired at the 2010 trade deadline, along with Joe Martinez, in exchange for Javier Lopez.  Martinez was designated for assignment over the off-season, and claimed by the Cleveland Indians. Bowker will be...
