Afternoon Notes From Instructs 9/29

Morning practices are over, and the Pirates are about to play a game against the Phillies.  Some notes from this afternoon: -Yesterday I mentioned that Matt Curry and Eric Fryer were both getting time at third base.  Curry was just there in a sandlot type setting, due to the intersquad game.  Fryer, on the other hand, is getting time at third base to increase his versatility.  He was back at third base today during a batting practice...

Instructs Day One: Allie, Holmes, Burnette, Gift

I arrived in Florida around 3:30 AM this morning, after about 15 hours of driving.  After a bit of sleep, I went over to Pirate City, where the Pirates were having a camp day, and an intersquad game.  There wasn’t much to report on.  Each pitcher threw an inning, and it was hard getting a read on the position players, since they didn’t have numbers, and kept switching spots during the game.  I can recognize most of them...

Gerrit Cole’s Instructional League Debut

Yesterday Gerrit Cole made his instructional league debut, which was also his pro debut.  I didn’t get a chance to see the outing live, as I was driving down to Florida at the time.  However, I did receive a few reports on the outing today, including some thoughts from Cole himself. Cole ended up throwing four shutout innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out seven.  Cole was working around 98-99 MPH, and added...

Jordy Mercer Named to Team USA Roster

Team USA has announced their roster for the 2011 World Cup and the Pan Am tournaments, with Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jordy Mercer being named as a member of the team.  This is the second year in a row that a Pirates shortstop prospect has played for Team USA.  Last year Chase d’Arnaud played for the team, after being a late season addition to replace catcher Austin Romine.  Team USA begins their training schedule on September...
