WTM’S PLAYER PROFILE

Eagan didn’t put up big numbers at Arkansas, batting 298/370/444 as a junior.  His plate discipline was marginal, with 22 walks and 37 strikeouts in 225 ABs, and his power is more gap-to-gap than over-the-fence.  Eagan put up lines of 288/364/406 in 2015 and 301/411/398 in 2014, so he hit pretty much the same throughout his college career.  He’s played first and third as well as center, and may be more of a corner player in the pros.  He didn’t steal many bases in college and isn’t a speedster.  Baseball America didn’t include him among its top 500 draft prospects.  Eagan signed for $160,000, which was $2000 below the slot amount.

2016
A-:  277/311/375, 112 AB, 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 BB, 10 K, 3-4 SB

Eagan played in the outfield semi-regularly at Morgantown, seeing more time in center but some time at all three positions.  He got hurt in early August and missed the last month of the season.  He made contact consistently and showed a little gap power, but his OBP was low because he didn’t draw walks.  Eagan had an .803 OPS against LHPs and only .618 against RHPs, but that may have been the product of small sample sizes.

2017
A:  261/317/388, 436 AB, 21 2B, 5 3B, 8 HR, 28 BB, 58 K, 5-13 SB

Eagan was the regular right fielder for West Virginia.  At the plate, he had about the same year as in 2016.  His production came in bunches; he had an OPS of .850 in May and .879 in July, but just .453 in June and under .700 in April and August.  He didn’t strike out much but didn’t walk much, either.  He had a small reverse platoon split.

Eagan seemed like a curious pick for the top ten draft rounds.  He doesn’t really appear to have the bat for a corner outfielder.  He’ll probably go to Bradenton in 2018.
