WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Beddes has a huge workhorse frame and he can get his fastball up to 95 MPH, working in the 90-94 range. He also has a low-80s curve and a cutter. He was a starter for all four seasons at Utah Valley and put in at least 84 innings in each of his last three seasons. In 2016, he had a 4.40 ERA in 92 innings, with 91 strikeouts. He had control issues each year, so that held back his draft position. As a senior, he signed quickly.

2016
A-:  6-3-0, 2.27 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 71.1 IP, 3.0 BB/9, 6.9 K/9

Beddes spent the season in the Morgantown rotation, after initially pitching in relief twice.  He got very good results without dominating, helped by a very low .238 BABIP.  He also kept the ball in the park, allowing just three gopher balls.  Beddes was very tough on left-handed hitters, holding them to a .419 OPS.  Right-handed hitters had a .697 OPS against him.

The Pirates could send Beddes to either West Virginia or Bradenton in 2017.
