WTM’S PLAYER PROFILE

Lee went to Florida International University and Santa Fe College for his first two years in college.  His history shows some good K rates with control problems.  Lee pitched in a swing role for FIU in 2015, posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.64 WHIP, with 39 strikeouts and 20 walks in 36.2 IP.  In 2016, he started 14 games for Santa Fe and posted an ERA of 4.00 with 58 strikeouts and 41 walks in 54 innings.  It was enough to get him drafted by the Giants in a late round, but he didn’t sign.  Lee threw only two innings for NCAA champion Florida in 2017, one on March 10th and one more on May 27th.  He hit three batters and threw a wild pitch in the latter game.  It’s not clear whether he was hurt the rest of the time.  The Pirates signed Lee about a week and a half after the college world series ended.  The main draw with him is a slow curve that has a lot of break.  His fastball is in the upper-80s.  Presumably, he’ll be something of a project.

2017
R:  0-1-2, 5.82 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 17.0 IP, 2.6 BB/9, 7.9 K/9

Lee pitched in relief in the GCL and didn’t get great results, although it probably wasn’t bad considering how little he’d pitched all year.  He showed the big breaking curve, but his fastball was very hittable.  His control was mostly fine, but sometimes erratic.

Lee is a very high-risk prospect who has some promise due to the curve.  He seems to have made some progress already with his control and if he does well in fall instructionals and spring training he could move up to Bristol or Morgantown.
