WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Pina doesn’t throw hard, at least not presently.  His fastball comes in mostly at 87-88, but he’s probably got room to add velocity.  He has a plus changeup and also a curve.

2016
DSL:  2-2-0, 1.46 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 61.2 IP, 1.3 BB/9, 5.0 K/9

Pina pitched out of the rotation in his debut season and had a lot of success, even starting in the league’s All-Star game.  He didn’t, though, miss many bats.  Possibly due to the change, left-handed batters managed only a .398 OPS against him, although the sample size of 60 plate appearances was very small.

2017
R:  1-2-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 28.0 IP, 1.6 BB/9, 7.4 K/9

Pina opened the season in the GCL rotation, but after July 22 his only appearances came in relief in mid-August.  He continued to throw strikes and improved his K rate, but opponents batted .305 against him.

2018
R+:  1-1-1, 3.86 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 11.2 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 10.0 K/9

Pina went to Bristol to pitch in relief.  He got into five games and was more effective than his ERA indicates.  Unfortunately, in early July he went on the disabled list for the rest of the season due to shoulder soreness.

Pina has some ability and hopefully will return healthy in 2019.
